LOL Think I've started enough new threads? lol
Anyways, I've been contemplating getting a new snake. But I like WAY too many.
I don't really have any preferance. It can be small-medium sized. I don't want something as large as a Burm or Retic or Anaconda lol.
I have a habit of liking the earth toned snakes. I'm wondering if this time I should buy a flashier one.
Anyways, all I'd like is a docile not-huge snake. LOL
So any suggestions and the reason for those suggestions would be awesome :)

African House Snake! They come in black, brown, red and sometimes you can even find an olive one. If those aren't earthtones, I don't know what is, LOL. They are small snakes that look more like a boid with their vertical slit pupils, but at the moment they are listed as a colubrid. An adult AHS won't eat anything bigger than an adult mouse, but will eat ANYTHING that will fit in it's mouth: Bats, rats, lizards, frogs, birds and other snakes! hehehe Hence the name 'house snake' because they eat the vermin and other small venomous snakes :) Check your PM's for more info.

You need to get yourself a nice colorful milk snake like a Honduran or a Pueblan. Even an Albino Nelsoni if you got the cash.

If you want a boid that stays small is easy to take care of and is dosile(starts to limit the options a bit)I could only add rosy boa(lady dragon already beat me to ahs) Columbians can stay small but there is much to much chance they will become large.Columbians do have good temperment for the most part but they will bite you from time to time(like most snakes) and are very powerful(I can't stress enough how strong a full grown Boa Constrictor can be) I would keep my eye on the snake classified's (were all posts for snakes for sale should be posted) from time to time Rosy boas pop up as do african house snakes. I hope you find what you are looking for.

Sumatran Blood python won't usually get larger than maybe 7 feet but can get enormous in girth. Several color morphs are available http://www.a1pythons.com/blood.htm

I'll go with Nightcrawling in that if you don't already own a corn, they are great snakes, Those were my first snakes and still one of my favorites. They come in uncountable colours and patterns, are easy to take care of, readily take f/t mice and/or rats and stay a nice managable size (3.5- 4 feet).
@Nightcrawler, I don't know where you saw a 7' corn but I think the largest Ive ever heard of was just over 6' and that size is VERY rare. You can except about 4 feet, give or take a few inches :)
Also Mary made a good suggestion with the Irian Jaya Carpets, they get a nice 4-5 feet, stay slender and are probably the most docile and most managable carpets which are awsome display animals and just fasinating to watch and great to handle!
Good luck with whatever you do choose and let us all know when the time comes:)

My corn is 5'6'' a very nice female that will eat small rats and almost got one of my sisters newborn kitten but i caught it before it lunged. You will have to get a very secure lid for your corn cuz they are very strong and will push the lid open.

I got 7' off a carsheet somewhere, but in the wild they get that big. But, Tinytim is way right you have to have a pretty strong enclosure rubbermaids work really well becuase they have a built in locking system. As long as you remember to lock it all the way you have nothing to worry about. GET A CORN!!!!!!!
Kenyan Sand boas stay pretty small and are docile. They are also earth toned and are relatively easy to care for.
If you want a flashier boid, then perhaps a brazilian rainbow boa? Looks at Clownfishie's avatar for an example.

I think I've got it...
There are three color variations in corns that I"m looking at. I've always been fond of one straight color. I have been looking at:
HypoBlood Corns, Blizzard Corns and I'd like to know if there's any such thing as a pitch BLACK corn.
The reason I chose thee is from the posts about the corns, and I was browsing pictures and I just fell in love. I'll try uploading the pics in the next post...

Here is a black kingsnake picture I found on applegatereptiles.com:

Also, instead of a blizzard corn, what about a leucistic texas ratsnake? They grow slightly bigger, but have a more aggressive disposition.

I suggest blood pythons, Sumatran short-tailed pythons and Borneo short-tailed pythons. These all don't get too big, can be very tame, eat great, look great and are not that challenging to take care of!!!

ps. Check my gallery under my avatar for pics of my blood python.

There are no pure black corns yet and even blizzards will often show some yellow residual pattern. The degree to which bloodreds turn red is also quite variable - seems the corn pattern is hard to eliminate. Bloodreds and blizzards are less frequent than other corn varieties in Canada, hence higher prices.
The black ratsnake starts out with saddles but becomes increasingly black with age, although many retain some of the saddle pattern. If you like the reddish look, everglades ratsnakes are relatively common and mature to have just faint traces of pattern with and orangy-red look.
For black snakes, the Mexican black kingsnake is one of the nicest - moderate size (4 ft), great gentle temperment, shiny jet black and great feeders. There are a few threads in recent past on this forum that have lots of pictures. They are a great pet species - and usually not too expensive.

A good site to look at corns is :
http://members.aol.com/guttata319/Hawkherp/morfs.html
It is about color & pattern variations & I believe is by Richard Zuchowski??
I've been researching corns on-line now for months. I finally got 3 about 2 months ago so if you want any other info I found please feel free to contact me. I can suggest breeders , too.
Good luck with your decision!

The above site is actually owned by Shawn Lockert who is using Rich's pictures and those of others by permission. Rich's site is http://www.serpenco.com/ and is one of the most informative sites on corns that there is. He is the guru of corns in the US and if you click on current pricelist there are links to photos and extensive descriptions of all the corn morphs, many of which Rich was responsible for developing. Great site to check out for corn info.

I still say a corn would be great for you, you would love one I also agree with rat snakes they are great snakes and I'm sure one would be great for you. A boa or Python is no fun compared to colbrids they are better well thats my opion anywayz. But you decide what would be best for you and if you want a boa or python suggest a Ball Python or a Blood Python.

African House snakes are easy keepers as are most of the North American Rat snakes (black rats are one of my faves.). If you really want a python, carpet pythons are pretty easy and get some size on them though they don't bulk up like C.A. boas or Blood pythons do. Rainbow boas are nice if you can handle the humidity requirements and don't mind an occasionally nippy snake. I finally got a Mexican Black king and it's relatively calm for a king and eats great. If you don't mind cleaning up a messy cage, black tail cribos are really cool snakes too, very active, friendly and inquisitive. Just some thoughts...
Lora
How about a black kingsnake, they feed easy on mice and are really freindly.
Or you go with a corn snake, I own 2 and they're pretty decent

hmm.......I think a rat snake would be perfect. I'm only now coming to like snakes, and out of all the ones I have handled my favorite is Tim's Everglades (Elaphe obsoleta rossalleni). Juveniles are a cream tone with orangish hues and have some small, slightly darker saddles along their backs. As they mature they devlope 4 indestinct lines head to tail and take on a ground color ranging from pale orange to a deep cooper-red color. Their temperment is much the same as corns, as they are extremely similar, and there is no lack of info on them. Another beautiful variety of rat snake is the Elaphe situla, the Leopard rat snake. While it is not very common, it is extremely beautiful. They get about 3.5' and are not to big in girth. At first glance it resembles a corn. It is spotted distictly from head to tail with what looks like two circles fused together that repeat along the back. The ground color is cream to orange and the saddles are usually reddish-orange outlined faintly with black. They like it hot and dry, temps around 81-83 with basking areas and at least a 12 hour photo period. They often fast but take mice and rats easily. They are hard to find but well worth the hard work it takes to acquire one.

Ball pythons make good pets. They only get like 4'-6' feet.
