I have a small 5.5 gallon aquarium that I would like to fit with a nice and simple screen lid.

I'm willing to get together the raw materials and make one (if it isn't too hard and the price is right) or buy one (if the price is reasonable).

Anyways, I have the following questions to ask:

1) Is it generally worth it to make a homemade screen lid?
2) Are there plans/instructions for making screen lids on the internet? Where could they be found?
3) Do screen lids typically fit snuggly into the opening or are they attached somehow?
4) What would be the price for a very plain screen lid for a 5.5 gallon aquarium?

I'd also appreciate any general advise regarding fitting an aquarium with a screen lid. Thanks.

I think its only really worth it to make your own screen lid if you have big enclosure to cover, and you cant find the proper lid at the pet store. Im sure your local pet store will have a 5.5 gallon lid, and they are probably pretty cheap too!
just my $00.02

I'm sure they're very cheap at the pet store. Is it for crickets? If it is and you're making the lid don't use the fiber glass mesh stuff cuz eventually they might chew through it.

i dont even think u should say eventualy martinw give em about 2 hours and there through i lost a thousand crickets that way lol but the easiest way to make a screen lid is to make a square of of wood get some metal screen and stapel it to the top and it depends what you are putting in the cage if you want it snug or not like for a snake it should definetly be snug

Alex and Martin,

Thanks for the advise. I think I might as well bring the dimensions of the tank the next time i find myself in a pet store.

Someone recommended window screening kits to me (sorry whoever you were - short memory :( ) but for a 5 gallon it's not likely to be economically feasible... premade lids by Hagen at least are out there (I have one) but there's no hatch on them...
