I would go for the Argentine. Mainly because Dumerils are hard to get feeding sometimes. Don't let the hissing get to you with a baby Argie, it's mostly bluff ;) Once they learn that you aren't going to harm them, they calm right down.

Either one would be an excellent choice. I have both and they are awesome snakes. I think both of these are under rated. If you've got the space, time and knowledge get both.
well, my brother and sister had turtles that they just got rid of and I got the cage. The reptile store I go to has both snakes and i know her dums. is feeding I am getting rid of my burm because it was a big mistake to buy a snake that gets so big. I thought I could house her but plans changedand I will ahve to get rid of her. so... I got rome for one more for sure and maybe anouther one but it may be hard to pull it off. (mom doent want me to get any more stuff) well keep the ideas coming
Thanks

I like Dumerils but it's just as LdyDrgn said they can be hard to start. Havenots26 probable remebers the trouble I had with my little male Dum getting him to start lol. Don't have any expeirence with Argentines but they are neat looking too.

You do know how big Argentine's get, right? I'm just asking, cause while they are not on the same scale as a burm, they are not lightweights, either.

Neither are Dumerils Baroness ;) They have the potential to be quite large as well.
I've been keeping snakes for 6 years I know (the burm was a big mistake) but thanks for asking it's important to.

Frankie, I'm having that problem now, with one of my females. For months she was eating without hesitation on frozen thawed weekly and now she won't eat anything put p/k about once a month. She had a vet visit and got a clean bill of health.
Matt, If you do get a Dumerils be prepared for it to go on hunger strikes every once in awhile, just be patient. Argentines on the other hand(mine anyway) are normally avid feeders and are always ready to eat. As the folks here mentioned, both of these snakes have the potential to become quite big. If the Argi they have at that pet store is a female she can easily obtain ten feet! Just do your homework and decide which you like the best and can care for properly before you make your purchase. Hope that helps.
John
size (as far as these two snakes go )and small complacations in husbandry arent big issues. another thing I wanrt them for is educational persentaions. Wich one would be best for this?

From what I understand, Dums are shy and skittish snakes that prefer to hide. I would think an Argie would be your best bet. They are a bit more active and don't hide nearly as much as bci/bcc do.

Hey I was there... where were you? lol oohhhhh that's right... that's where I met you, Mike, Axel, and Davis :p.
I think dumerils are prettier, but I love Argentines. I honestly can't pick one or the other, haha. They're both great snakes :)

both snakes are cites 1.
this means that they have to be properly microchipped before they can be legally sold. cites is there for a reason. it may seem outdated but its still the law, it doesnt matter which one is prettier. dumerils are way easier to care for than argentines, but they are both listed as endangered for one reason or an another. if you ask alot of breeders that offer dumerils or argentines to show you the correct and legal paperwork theyd have nothing. the only reason that these snakes are readily available in canada is because they have been illegally smuggled into this country from elsewhere ( usually the states)
but seeing as ppl are only interested in pretty snakes in can illegally get you a pair of proven 4 yr old adults for 400 uk pounds.

Is this microchip law only in Canada or what? Here in the states, any CBB Dumerils or Argentine (and Pimburan pythons, too for that matter) do NOT have to be microchipped. You see these animals in abundance at many reptile shows..... Eastern Indigos are a federally protected species here, too, and they don't have to be chipped if CBB. Permits are needed in many states, but not a microchip.

Boa Constrictor Occidentalis to death, as argentinian I am proud to claim that we have the best snake ever, beautiful and with an awesome personality. Very underrated in here tough (dunno why)
Martin.
I haven't heard of any microchip law in either the States or Canada. I know that almost all (if not all) in Canada are not microchipped. As I understand it the same goes in the States as well. As long as you have proof of legal aquisition (ie- paperwork) you cannot get in any trouble, and from what I am told, basically none of the animals in the US have accompanying paperwork, as well as many of the animals up here do not. As long as you are not trying to export the animals it really isn't of concern to CITES.
krrc,
If you can house and keep both, I would say go for it. Someone told me that a long time ago when I asked a similar question and they were right, because if you want both you will probably eventually get the other one anyways ;)

Thanks Linds. I didn't think there was any law about that. LOL

well maybe the microchipping is just in europe, which if it is makes no sense whatsoever. the whole reason for the microchipping is that papers can and are dodctored to make an animal look legal. also if you contact the canadain wildlife service they will tell you that it is very hard to get the correct paperwork to bring cites 1 animals across the us border, as for them not having proper paperwork then that is flying in the face of stupidity. these animals are endangered in their natural habitats. a big problem happened in the states a few years ago with dumerills that were being bred with too close relatives. this made for weak animals, but if they had been properly documented then this would never have happened.
cheers
paul
Dumerils are great I breed them and have 2 gravid ones right now, the one female is as big as a house. they always eat and are very melow. Never had trouble withe getting the babies to eat.
I've never heard of the mico chip law, and as for cities well they need to do a little revamping and the people runing the show should get to know thier own rules and laws.(thirdgeneration animals drop to appendix 2, cities 1 has 2 different levels threatened, endangered)
Piers
you have any pics of your dums?
I can't get the scanner to work, but I'm working on getting a new stack and a digital camera soon. I'm dying to sow off some of my animals.

My vote is on the Dumie, but I partial because of my baby. I just think that the Dumeril Boa is the pretty boy of the midsized snakes, so who wouldn't want to own one! Mine came from a breeder and he hasn't had any eating problems or shyness problems, but one from a pet store might be different.

Definitely Bco, my 2 are my favorites in my collection
I have both. The Dumerils is kind of sluggish compared to Greyson (see my avitar). If I had to choose one, I would go with the Argentine hands down.
just curious u said alittle further down in the post that u wasn't worried about size or husbandry?? then why not to sound smart or anything cuz it ain't ment to be smart allick statement but why u gonna get rid of the burm?? u said at the beginning that u made a mistake buying her for that reason? but u want a argentine or a dumeril they both can be a good size. just my input though.

They won't get nearly as large as a burm, though. Argentines and Dumerils do have the ability to get quite large for boas, but not 15-25 feet.

No microchip law in the states that I know of. I have four Dums and have bred them as well. They are calm pleasant snakes with a great temperament. One of my females now is about 7FT, the other three are between 5-6FT. They do grow slower than the BCI's and usually average 6-7FT, but can reach 9FT.
I am looking at getting a trio of Argies next year, just got a pair of Hogs. I think Argies are great looking snakes especially the nice Black/White ones and the T+ Albinos.
Here is a year old pic of my female, she’s grown quite a bit since this pic and looks much better. I’ll have to update my pics after this breeding season.

Hehe, now this thread really blows my mind!!! I would REALLY like to have a legal couple of BCOs, here in Canada but i don't even know if that exists yet!!! As for the dums, i've already fallen for one and i have a little female which eats perfectly, as long as i give her live food... I'm actually having a few problems switching her to F/T but i say Dums are wonderful! I'm just so jealous to hear that it seems so normal to you guys to see dums and argies in reptiles shows!!! As soon as i've got my couple of ETB, my couple of BCI and my couple of Dumerils, i'll go for BCOs for sure, then Womas then Olive pythons if i have the room for them :).
phil.
I have a dumerils and up until recently had three. I decided to down size my collection. Anyway I believe dums are a very special boa. They are a little shy but are very docile. They stay smaller than most large boas 6 to 7 ft. and are in my opinion a all around great snake. The argentine boa is also a cool looking boa that grows to 7 to 9 ft. I have never owned one but i hear that they can be agressive. You say the pet shop has one. I would handle both snakes and see which one you like the best. If you do go for the dums, ask to see it eat before you bring it home.
Good luck with which ever one you buy.
