There have been quite a few people mention this heat rope stuff and I am kinda curious to see what it is. I am familiar and use heat tape, lights, heat pads all with dimmers, but what is this heat rope exactly, and how does it work in comparison to the heat tape?
Thanks for your time in advance
Unless I'm mistaken, isn't it the stuff you wrap around pipes to keep them from freezing?
Its works great.....plus alot more flexable

This is what you are looking for. I bought mine from Grant in Mississauga. :)

I will be using it on my leo racks. Can't wait to try it out. :) It is really, really rubbery and flexable. ANd it heats better than the de-icing cable. Probably safer too.
Interesting..... any suggestions to heat 24" of dirt? :)

The heat rope is simply a revolutionary product. It comes in various lengths and various wattage. From 15 foot to something like 37 foot lengths. It is allready wired up and ready to go. If oyu want more information feel free to email me or call me directly.

can you cut this stuff in to smaller lengths and use it with a dimmer switch?????
you can use it with a dimmer switch, but as far as i know, you can not cut it to smaller lengths.. basically what you see is what you get!
u can't cut it but it work WONDERS.. I have done my whole rack on it .. muh cheaper and safer then Heat tape.. only downsize is u have no idea how long it will last..
V.HB ... I actually ordered an other 38 feet to heat my dirt.. I am hoping it will work wonders.. ill let u knwo how it goes...

so basicaly if i want to heat indevidual enclosures i should stick to heat tape as appose to using 15' of heat cable in a 6'x2 1/2 x2 enclosure?
sounds great for racking systems but not for indevidual enclosures!

How do u set them up so each container gets enough heat when using the rope with racks? Anyone have any photos of there racks with heat rope?

That's the great part... unlike heat tape and all that... this stuff is approved :) I'm definitely going to be trying it in my next rack :)

If it's CSA approved that's great! I've been trying to convince my dad to let me use heat tape but he's not letting me because insurance won't cover accidents on it. Hopefully you're right, but I haven't been able to find somewhere in Ottawa that sells it. Does anyone know where I can get it, preferably in Ottawa?

Ok, just saw this thread, who has information on howmuch heat these things put out and howthey fare in racking systems and how one can get it in Canada?
from what i saw at the show there was, 15 Watt, 25 Watt, 50 Watt and 80 Watt.. The only person i know of using it right now is Dom and he says it working great for him!!
Katt,
Email Grant. He had a bunch of it at the last show making its debut in the reptile world :) As long as you don't coil the stuff it doesn't get very hot at all... didn't have a temp guage but it was probably no more than 95 I'd say (and that was in a room that was a zillion degrees...lol :p), however I don't know how much that would change once its under a rubbermaid since we were just plugging it into the wall to see what the stuff was like. Smells like flowers...lol :p I know it comes in as little as 15 watts (if I remember correctly).
So where do you put it in a cage? On the back of the enclosure, under the substrate?
Thanks
Zoe
ok well Look at it this way .. it really is a rope.. so the way I used it is simple..
took a router.. made chanels in the wood.. put the cable in it and silliconed it.. I doubled the cabel with an inch gap between the cable ... and the tupperwares simply slide on top of the wires.. I have pics in my gallery..
I set it up on a dimer as at full heat .. I am hittng 120 F .. I am using the 80 watt .. wich has about 8 feet of heatting I think..
I am also using it in my monitors cage.. simply stuck it inside the dirt... a little scattered arouns.. dirt is heated and a t comfy 88 ish temp.. I have no complaints..
As far as i know of .. Grant from PCPC is the only one to have it but If u look hard enough .. it is the same as the wires to heat piping and ****.. so technincally you should be able to find them in hardwarestore.. but I have never seen em'..
Thinking about it.. I really don't think its a great product for one cage.. or one enclosure.. great ofr racks or really large cages..
I have no idea how I would set it up in a cage but i woudl assume for arboreals u could se it up on the wall with a staple gun..
It does generate lots of heat but it not that hot to the toush.. so the animal could touch it with probably no harm..
I was planning on buying from applegate (i think? i forget - look up Heat Rope in yahoo and its the first one), and using it in my sectioned IJ cage that is 6H x 3W x 1.5D.

I got some heat rope from www.portcreditpets.com and it's working great. I'm using it on metal wire racks. I'm using the 50W ones. I zig-zag it back and forth 4 times under rubbermaid containers, each around 1" apart. The temp is around 90*F for my leos. I use one rope for 4 tubs. I tried the 15W ones as well but they were too weak. They're expensive but I think it's worth it.

Hit the plumbing section at any Canadian Tire & you can buy various lengths of the stuff. I used it in my incubator last year with a "wafer" thermosat spliced in & it worked fine. I don't know if this is the exact same stuff you guys are talking about, but it is available everywhere & does the same thing more or less. Mark I.

Well, I'm finally starting on my cages today! As we speak hubby is putting in the groove with the router. Still lots of work to do on them. But I' m taking a few pics as it goes along so I can post them later. ;) We are building 4 cages on top and the racks below. The entire unit is roughly 6x2x6. Cages on top will have heat lights and uv and the racks below will be heated with the heat rope I got from Grant. :) Can't wait till it's done!!

I bought 4 storage racks at Canadian Tire with 3 bins in each. They were onsale for 12.50. I am going to use them for my hatchling leo's next season.
I want to use heat rope on the bottom of each tub to effectively heat my bins. How do I go about doing this;
Do I apply the heat Rope in a zig zagged fashion at the bottom of each bin?
The Bins are 16.5x13.5, so I'm guessng I would want the heated surface area of a small UTH. How much heat Tape would be needed to acheive good heating on each?
Is it safe to use electrical tape to stick the rope directly to the bottom of the bin?
Here's the link to the bin. I am looking for Tips, Thanks ;)
