Sex determination in pythons..

Has there been any study done on this matters.. Anyone here have any ratios of their clutches..

I am just pissed as i got a 17.3 ratio .. wich is just way way to far from the 1:1 expected ratio I should of gotten .. I can't get my Jaguar het coastal because of this :(:(

I incubated between 88.3-88.7 // @ 95% humidity..

Any thoughts on this mattter?

btw.. there will be many males for sale soon enough!

well Dom as you probably know with Leo eggs temps below 84F are generally female, 84-86F a close 1:1 ratio, and above 86F usually males however I have never heard of this effect being studied in Morelia. BTW mail me on a price for one(poor broke graduate student price lol).

lol I intend on selling em for 175$ canadian.. only males.. but only in canada and probably will not even ship cause I doubt i will have too.. I have many ppl interested so I don't think Ill even have to go out of Ottawa and Toronto.

Being in the states makes it hard for you.. Talk to Jkursoki (SP) .. he has some as well and probably will sell some.. he's in the US.

If carpet python sex determination is entirely chromosomal, which I suspect it is, then each neonate has a 50% chance of being either male or female, so there's no guarantee that a clutch will produce a 50/50 yield...

It's like a flip of the coin for each snake, odds are that after many flips you'll get heads and tails (or male/female) an equal number of times, but the fewer flips you try, the more random the process will seem, if that makes any sense...Like, if we pooled the sex ratio results from a bunch of people's clutches we'd probably see the 50/50 ratio come out...

Basically, it's because of "sampling error", too small a sample doesn't yield the statistically expected results.

If you had hatched out, say, 100 eggs instead of 20 it probably would have been a more even distribution.

BUT 20 is not that small of a sample.. I mean 17 males to 3 females is so far off.. I think I got just really unlucky or there is more then just genetics behing it..

Dom did you do the popping?

How hard/obvious was it that they were males as apposed to females?

I have tried to pop mine, but they are so small I fear I am going to crush them.

Yes I popped them all!

Males are 100% defenite .. its impossible to mistake a male. The've got 3 mm hemipenes lol
Females I am 95% sure they are..


There really easy to pop .. although if u are not possitive about it - do it with someone who knows what there doing. I put my fngers over tclaocal opening .. thumb on back oposite to the vent.. and I roll my finger up his tail towards the vent.. they simply pop out lol .. Be gently - although I and my friend got bitten tons of times doing it ..

it is not so so bad sell the males and get femals that way yo will have un related pairs.

IJ's are still imported. I'd be surprised if they weren't cheaper.

The Jaguar line is not proven yet.. it could either be a simple het lr a co-dominant trait...

It will be proven this year .. Its alright .. I was taking a risk anyway in getting this animal.. now I can sleep better at night..
