i got my ball to eat a pinky rabbit tonight, i wasnt sure if he would but did it without hesitation.
this makes me happy because i just found a rabbit breeder and i can get them soooo cheap. way cheaper than i can get mice and rats for.
just had to tell someone :)

That is very encouraging to me, because I know balls are VERY weird eaters, and I have just started breeding rabbits to feed all my large boas and burms. Was playing around with the idea of maybe trying to convert the balls to rabbits, also. Thanks for sharing, maybe now I won't feel like it would be for nothing!!

I would be careful about switching a ball python to something like rabbits. Balls can be very picky eaters, so much so that they may refuse all other foods if they have decided that they have a favorite (so to speak). Are you 100% CERTAIN that you can get rabbits of the correct size for the ball? (rabbit babies grow very fast, by the way). If it gets too hot in the summer, the rabbits won't breed (i.e. no babies), and in the dead of winter, alot of babies don't make it.
There is a huge rabbit market here where I live, and I have several rabbit farmer friends (1000's of rabbits!! quite a sight to see!), and even they sometimes don't have the rabbits I need for the younger pythons. Just something to consider....my opinion is that if you have a bp that is eating reliably on mice or rats, why tempt fate and switch them?
Of course, you might be lucky and have one of those balls that will eat just about anything. By the way, what are you paying for the rabbits? Down here I get 20 lb rabbits for $3, and get babies for $.80 (so I do understand the reasoning behind buying cheaper food!)

well these people breed rabbits year round and they also have all sizes all year round so i am not to worried. plus like i said before my ball has went from mice to rats to rabbits in 2 weeks so i hopefully have nothing to worry about.
i am paying 0.70 cents for the babies and the ones i got for my boa im paying $1 dollar for so it is really really cheap
plus i cant always get rats where i am either so thats why i went this route. plus the breeder only lives 20 min away

I breed mice and rats and was going to start meat rabbits this spring but I'm just too busy to start any new projects right now. but when I do it's going to be rabbits for all my snakes! I'm glad to hear that balls will in fact take them.
Cheers,
Trevor
