Its not easy to determine the size of monitors in this complex, there’s still a number of localities to be discovered, as for the 12+ morph that we know of, they vary considerably in size, hers an estimate from my limited experience with this group, these figures are from my collection unless otherwise stated, they are not definite measurements but a grosses estimation, witch maybe used as a general guideline or a starting point to an in-depth study.
Jobiensis sorong max TL 40in (possibly 48in)
Jobiensis Merauke max TL 36in (possibly 48in)
Jobiensis orange highland Jayapura max TL 36in
Jobiensis Battanta max TL 40in
Jobiensis aru max TL 36in
Jobiensis Biak max TL 30in
Jobiensis Halamahera max TL 36in
Jobiensis Waigeo max TL 48in+?
Doreanus Sorong and Irian jaya considered the biggest PNG lizard by local trappers, they estimate 6.5 to 7 feet as max TL. The biggest I have seen was TL 74in
Doreanus Merauke max TL48in
Doreanus Jayapura max TL 48in?
Doreanus yowonoi Halamahera max TL 48-60in
Doreanus Halamahera small indicus type with deep blue tail max TL 36in
Hope this helps a little Mark, I dint measure them accurately but preferred to give you an estimate max TL, my guess is all these morphs have the same SVL to tail ratio, therefore I didn’t disturb them for this (not museum specimens)
In all Jobiensis head structure was similar in both sex, however thers is a significant difference in tail height, males always expressed a higher tail then females.
In Doreanus all tails where similar in structure, but as opposed to Jobiensis the head morphologies was different between sexes, males developed much bigger heads with bulging snout as in Salvadorii.
Only Halamahera blue tails don’t show this head morphologies difference, and are quit similar in both sex.
So my guess who’d be the different ratio of SVL and TL in these species who’d prove of very limited value, in fact I think all the above has little value, as many peoples probably have seen bigger monitors then my max TL estimate.
