View Full Version : Please Help! Lost Python
Alright folks...here's the deal, I inherited a 5 foot python from my kid and my ex-wife. I just moved it into my house a few days ago. It escaped out of its cage and is no where to be found.
Any suggestions on how to find the sucker? Should I buy a bunch of rats and let 'em run around in his cage or something? I have no idea, this is my first time to own a snake and am at a complete loss.
Any and all ideas, suggestions, or feedback is appreciated!
O.k. well put your face on the ground and look. Everywhere. They like to hide in dark places, sometimes in cooler places than you'd expect, sometimes warmer. TVs, computers, etc.
This guy is five feet so it will be easier than finding a baby. You could try the rat idea, he might go for it.
Normally when people loose snakes, they look and look and look and a week or so after they start looking the snake shows up right in front of you. It happens a lot.
Good luck!

here are a few suggestions... Wait untill its night time and get a flash light... sit in the middle of the room where it escaped with the lights out and listen for him... You can also run tape upside down with the sticky side up across all of the door ways etc and if he crosses them the tape will stick to him and you will be able to track his movement this way and get a idea as to where he is....
Check inside any boxxes, under couches... I wouldn't buy live rats and let them live in the tank. 1 dead one should do... oh ya, figure out how it escaped because until you fix that it will keep escaping.
Look for him/her in warm, dark places like the back of the refridgerator, the telly, washer/dryer etc.
What kind of python is it? Generally, they are slow moving, and you should find them close by.
It is not an idea to let rats run around, but what you could do is to place a prekilled rat under the heat lamp of its cage and leave it open.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the suggestions! I guess I'll head home shortly, and start tearing the place up looking for "Zeus" that's his name.
My ex-wife is all freaking out saying I need to call animal control because she is afraid that he is going to escape and kill a kid or a dog or something. I seriously doubt he has gotten very far, and besides he's not going to go on a rampage of the neighborhood leaving dead children and dogs in his wake...right?

Well i dont think you have to think of that bit small to be killing kid's and dog's i am sure he is close by and should have no problem's finding him but i disagree with the tape idea that could hurt the snake if it has to be pealed off "THINK ABOUT IT"
but the flash light idea is a good one i would try that also but look every were like under the wall unit and stuff good luck
I doubt that a 5' snake could kill kids or dogs, but it might cause a stir with the neighbours.
Good luck finding the snake!

Don't forget to look UP as well, sometimes they'll came out on bookshelves etc.
you won't have to worry about the 5' snake killing people or most dogs...
Alright Everyone, good news!
I went home at lunch and the sucker was sitting right next to his cage. I bought him a good sized rat to reward the prodigal son on his return.
I found out that he is a Burmese Python. Since I'm new at this game, I might come in from time to time for advice and to talk about Zeus.
Thanks again!
Good to hear you found him. Do you know how he got out?
