Hay Every one I have a couple quick questions. I have a few snakes that I want to build custom cages for but I would like to make them stackable witch means I cant use a light for heat. What does every one think I should use I dont think a heat matt alone would work since I live in NY and in the winter it gets a bit cold. Also what is the best material to use that will last a long time. Wood?
Thanks

Hello you could use a light you would just have to mount a fixture to the inside ceiling of the cage and put a guard around it .Or what I have seen and heard of alot of people using is heat tape ,just a couple of options for ya hope it helps .AL

There 4 x 2 x 1's made of white melamine heated with heat tape.
i prefer the melamine as you dont have to worry about water proofing anything like most other wood enclosures its only downside is its weight (but i dont find it a problem)
You could either use heat pads or heat tape, your choice.
I prefer heat tape or UTH's as i feel they're alot more reliable then lamps. ive had way to many lamps blow on me and spark flames.
living in new york shouldn't be a problem as it gets just as cold here in Toronto.

Grant, do you ever have a problem with heat trapping or anything like that? The way you have the heat tape pressed between the cages...how do you get any airflow over them? Is that little bit sticking out enough? Just curious...

Jason, ive never given my heat tape any air flow before.
Some pple think you need it, others dont. its up to the individual really.
i know some long time herpers that dont ever give there heat tape room to breath without any problems. as long as you have wired it correctly i dont see any reason why you would have a problem.
