Do you think about croc monitors?

I want your honest opinion, aim about to offer babies croc monitors to Canadian herpers but I have concerns, I consider them dangerous compare to waters or Nil’s
You guys have shown me how mature and responsible Canadian herpers are, therefore your opinion is important to me and will greatly influence my decision.
For your information I did sell one pair of croc monitors more then a year ago to a young man from Toronto, and I cant say it was a mistake the fellow that got them apparently was responsible enough not to make the headlight news. If you question why I who’d do that, let me say it’s not for money, what I hope for is to establish selective species mostly in Canada and Salvadorii is top priority on my list. Thanks for any given opinions pro or con all appreciated really.

I feel if you can find semi-sure good homes for them (no one is for sure, right?), or keep the ones who you cannot be sure will go to a safe home to avoid problems or accidents in the hands of a uneducated owner, instead of selling them to free up space to just anyone, then you are doing the right thing.

I strongly beleive that there should be more available in cancada.. you just have to be selective .. If I could have a CB croc monitor, I garantee you i would buy one

I don't think there is anything wrong with seeing them available in the trade, however there are probably more irresponsible, unexperienced herpers out there that would be attracted to them (due mainly to their size) than repsonsibale, competant keepers, so careful screening is key.

Seeing the way most people keep their reptiles, I would feel bad for 95% of any large monitor in captivity in Canada. They are just too smart and alert and curious not to be suffering in the majority of captiv situations. AS you very well know Steve, monitors are a whole different ball game.

But people will do what people will do.

I honestly think that there's not a big differiance between large snakes and croc monitors(other then spacial requirements). Both take a lot of care and knowledge. As long as you screen the wannabes from the more experianced herpers it should be fine. They are remarkable animals and deserve to be captive bred along with all other reptiles. I would love to see one up close!

jeff, i fully agree with you man,
there are some people that will do very well keeping large monitor, but I'd be more worried about the majority, not the minority that KNOWS what they are doing!!!

while they are a species that should be captive bred to avoid wc's being taken out of the wild, the housing concerns are the tricky thing... I'd love to have one but i don't have the space/time for one. maybe in a few years things will be different.
