View Full Version : Reptile TV show
I was just wondering and thinking about the fact that so many people misunderstand reptiles as pets. Secondly, exotic pets are getting to be more popular as time goes on so I thought, why aren't there any shows on pet reptiles?!
I think it would be a great idea, there are so many species and things to learn about them but all you see on discovery or animal planet are these animals in the wild. What about those who keep them as pets, I think we should have a show just about reptiles as pets. It could cover so much, basic info on species, husbandry, etc...
I think it would be great for those already in the hobby to enjoy and it would also help the way people see reptiles as pets. How better to educate the public by having a professional show on herp with a host that's a herpetologist, or at least very much experienced in the field.
I think that Animal planet would be the most open to such a show idea. I was thinking of writing up a letter and sending it along with as many hobbiest's "signatures" as we could get. Since the channel is diffused in many countries, it wouldn't matter from where you are.
What do you guys think? Worth a shot?

I have always thought that would be a good idea. Like the show "Breed all about it" but for other animals besides dogs. I will sign :)

I think it's a great idea. I watch a lot of animal shows and very rarely do I see anything about captive reptiles. (Besides the crocs that Steve has at Australia Zoo)
Usually it's some show designed to get ratings by playing to people's fear of snakes.
That's a most excellent idea!! Where do I sign? :D

first and only show that i have ever seen about snakes as pets was all about how large boids almost killed their keepers. they showed a boa, a carpet, a scrub, a burm, and a retic. i see only 2 of thos as actually posing much of a threat to anyone. but it had no husbandry info. just tryin to creep herp hatters out even more. oh yeah, they showed 1 cage, just before a 16 foot burm attacked the guy.
great idea. ill sign

Thats a great an excellent show that sometimes features herps is Amazing Pets, once a guy came on there with his green iggys and water dragons and made them pose in the most amazing positions, in little barbie houses, wereing clothes it was the most unbelievable thing I have ever seen!!! I wish my iggy would do that instead of sleeping all the time :( But I'll sign we could even get together after one of the PCPC shows and could bring my video camera and we can make a prototype demo to show the corparate guys what we have in mind.

To tell the truth, I don't think there's a large enough market for a network to commit the time and money to make a show. It's a great idea and I'd tape every episode made, but I don't think that it's too likely. I guess that's the sad part when education takes a back seat to finances.... :(
Did anyone ever watch "Monty's Traveling Reptile Show" back in the day? Man, I loved that show....
Money is an issue. the show has to warrent the cash the network spends on it (even if they received the show for free they still have people to pay to play it) and they have to attract advertisers.

I think it is a good idea.

a good idea for a "speacial" not something that could run consistantly. theres absolutly no way there would be enough material to keep making new episodes, espeacially when shows like the croc hunter, jeff corwin and oshea all have enough viewers. Maybe an exotic pet week on animal planet or something?
If you watch any of the pet shows, they frequently include reptiles as pets. I forget the names of them, I think one fo them is called the Pet Guys. If you watch nature shows, that's when you see them in the wild ;)

Maybe there wouldn't be enough viewers but maybe there would be if ridicoulous boring shows like Sew with Sue and French Fried can last for years on channels like Family and YTV I don't see why a purely herp related or even just exotic pet (include birds, fish and inverts) show could not survive maybe as a sunday only show like Your Big Break (I luv that show.) With specail guest like Steve Irwin and Mark O'Shea the show would take off easy enough. I worth a try, crazier things have succeeded (like that guy who tackles 15' salt water crocs...whats his name again?)

I saw a show called "Snake Wranglers" on the National Geographic channel last night. I don't know if it was a regular show or just a one show production.
Good show b.t.w. An Australian couple (just like Teri & Steve) drive around finding snakes for their reptile zoo. They were finding hots for venom milking. The guy even stopped to sign up for a small town rodeo...great stuff.

I think it's a good idea, but they have a point - there would have to be an audience. We all know that all of us would tune in everyday, but it would get boring to non-herpers... A special or something would work much better. :D I've always hoped to see one.
