Hello all,
Just a few questions about baby bearded dragons.

Is crushed walnut shells a suitable substrate?

And

From personal experience how many crickets a day do you feed to a 1-2 month old bearded dragon?

Thanks in advance.

I feed my baby bearded dragons that are about one month old, a dozen pin-head crickets a day, each. I feed them 6 in the morning and six in the afternoon.

If yours is taking medium sized crickets then a dozen or so should be fine. if s/he is taking oinheads then maybe give him like 2 dozen.

Crushed walnut shells carry the potential risk of impaction, as do all particulate substrates. If you choose to use a particulate substrate you can help prevent consumption (which leads to impaction) by feeding in a separate container, like a plastic tub.

I do not use any particulate substrates for my lizards. The risk is simply not justifiable in my opinion. My vet told me that she has seen three impactions (two that died) from Calci-Sand in the last month. There are no regulating agencies on these pet products and the manufacturers can print whatever they want on the package, including "safe and easy digestion!" even if it is complete BS.

My bearded dragon has a paper-towel substrate. Ultimate in easy cleanup.
