thoughts on Agentines.

HI I'm thinking of buying an Ageintine and the one I would buy was a very nice snake almost full grown (5-6 feet) male. He was rasied buy the owners son of the best reptile shop I have ever seen. I will also be trading her a simmalerly sized burm that I will not be able to care for in years to come. Anyways... anyone have any thoughts about these snakes? I have done limited research and they seem to have basic care requirements. But I dont see any threads about them on this site. Thanks always,

I say the same things about them every time the topics pops out, they are the best snakes ever!!
If the one you mention is tame, then go ahead, You won't ever regret your decision.
But no way by 5-6 feet a BCO is an adult, BCO are huge boas!!!
Anyway, if you any specific doubts about them, I would be glad to help....

hehehe, males get 8-10'. My male is not 2 yrs old yet and nearly 5'.

They are awesome snakes, you won't regret it :) They require slightly cooler temps than Colombian bci, so I would go with DTT of 85-88 and NTT of 75-78.

Argies are my favorite boas. They are gorgeous, and very sweet, once you get through all the bluff........lol. Anyway, here is my female, she's a little over 5ft.

It is possible that it is nearly full grown, they don't always finish up huge (though females typically do). Ask them how old the boa is just to be sure, if you don't want a monster. I've spoken with people that have adult males (5+ years old) in the 5'-7' range.
I wish that they were available up this way, or could at least be imported a little easier :confused: They are gorgeous animals and I would snatch a few of them up so fast if I had the chance....

I don't personally own one, but from what I've heard I believe they can be quite aggressive and nasty to own. Keep this in mind when you go to purchase one. If you don't mind being bitten go ahead. I am one who likes a docile snake myself =)

Heh, you might want to recheck your sources, they aren't agressive. If anything, they will hiss more then they will bite, and even then they are fine once out of the enclosure.

Thanks everyone for the info I really dont mind a snake at 8'-10' feet so that would be ok if it turned out that way. whay size cages do you keep adults in? 75 gal? or something like 4.5-5'x3'x2'-3'? (sorry if that was confusing) :)

The "Aggressive" nametag that has been placed on the Argentine's is largely a MYTH. There are some snakes of every species that are going to be aggressive, but please, don't believe this of all BCO's. They are loud, and will hiss open-mouthed, and put on a heck of a show when you first acquire them, but once settled in, and seeing that you do not fear their little "show", they will calm right down. My male is a prime example. When I brought him home as a yearling, he was very loud about being disturbed, and would rear up and give me an open-mouth hiss that would give you goosebumps. However, I had been told that this behavior was normal, and was all bluff. I just reached in, ignored his play-acting, and picked him up anyway. Once out, he was fine. A week later, no more show. I could just reach in anytime, and he never made a sound. They are very beautiful, very sweet snakes, and mine have yet to be aggressive. However, I do NOT recommend them as beginner snakes, due to the fact that people not used to or comfortable with snakes would probably be intimidated by this bluffing behavior, and the snake would probably never be handled enough to stop doing it, or the owner would give up and get rid of the snake.

zouleous, my male is the sweetest ever. He hissed all of ONCE when I brought him home. He was 7 months old when I got him. Ever since then he has been wonderful, social and almost loving. He loves to be in my face and gives me kisses, hehehe

Thanks for the compliment Linds, I just love that boy. And personally, I hope he does end up huge. He is already on large rats, he gets one every 2 weeks.... he had a massive growth spurt over the past 6 months. It blows my mind every time I hold him, LOL

I'm telling you Sheri...Your female and my male.... can you imagine the screemin babies they'd have? :eek: We should talk about it ;)

As some of you know (the ones that read the "Location" field).I'm argentinian and I live there, and the funny thing is that arg. herpers underrate the BCO, is just that so many BCOs are WC here that is a common snake and nobody here seem to see the beauty in them...crazy, isn't it?
Just another comment, I personally don't get tired saying they are the best snake in the world.

:)Michelle, Sheri, i think they are both beauties, as far as them making some real awsome babies , hey i think so!! LOL!! ;) Whats funny is my male argentine X colombian does the hiss and puff up bluff thing all the time. but hes not fooling me he never bites hes just full of hot air..hehehehe!! I pic him up and handle him all the time. He is growing very fast so i think hes gona take after the argentine side, but with colombian mix color.. :) great pics you two!!!

BCO's are the best! Yes, they put up quite a show when you first get them. My Argentine puffs ever now and tehn when I have her out, but doesnt really hiss anymore. She only hisses when she is on a nice warm spot, all curled up, and I try to move her. She is stubborn that way. I was taking pictures of her on a plant that I have in my house, and she went up to teh top and wouldn't 'et me get inside 5 feet of her without striking and hissing. A snake hook and some careful footwork later, I was able to get her down. lol. BCO's are great!

I rescued one in a pet store, she was loaded with worms from live feedings and had a case of the mites, It wasn't her fault it was her previous owners.
She was the sweetist snake Ive ever owned, I sold her when I
needed room for my BCC guyana I now wish I hadn't. The kids that bought her love her dearly .
She would hang form your sholder like a limp rag, you had to be careful to make sure she wouldn't fall off she trusted you that much. But an awsome feeder she would yank that rat out my hands and what a woosh.. hehe

Go for it. You won't be disappointed. They are wonderful snakes and as they grow out of there hissy young stage, they become quite docile. Do yourself a favor and get him!! Take care
