Has anyone ever heard of a Columbian Red Tail and a Hogg Isle mate?
Initially we were sold on the idea that the 2 would mate and have beautiful expensive babies (we had the CRT and were looking for another snake). Later we found out that that was just a sales tactic. Although we love them both, and have come to believe that both are girls, we are just curious if it was ever really possible. If anyone has heard of teh 2 successfully mating, do you have any pics to share?
Thanks!

They mate all the time and its easy to do. They are the same species.
But I wouldn't do it. No more Hoggs in the wild and we should do our best not to muddy the lines we have. If you're asking if it CAN be done, then yes. If you're asking if it SHOULD be done? Well, you'll have to answer that yourself. But most would say no (hopefully).

As far as 'expaensive' babies. No. The fact they are crosses will actually make them worthless. A pure Hogg is worth more than a Hogg x Colombian anyday! Never believe everything someone tells you when they are looking to sell a snake. :) Trusted breeders are the way to go. That or do a TON of research and then peruse reptile shows armed to teeth with knowledge.

Man were you ever miss guided! I can't agree enough with everything that the people in the two previouse post have said. If you want to sell a boa with a higher then normal price sell the columbian and buy a mate for your hog and help do your part to keep hog blood pure.

Yeah sounds like you were misguided. The advice of some people smells just like your snakes
no don't breed a normal to a hogg that would be very stupid true hoggs are very nice and hard to come by.don't ruin the blood line hoggs are to nice breed true hoggs please

:cool: I agree Hoggs should be kept pure and they are way to beautiful to cross breed... Keep the pure line going and dont cross breed.. ;) :D
Yup. As Jeff mentioned, these will readily breed with eachother, since they are the same subspecies of boa, just a different locale (however I have heard talk of Hogs becoming a separate subspecies in the future). Beautiful babies, yes they typically do produce some stunning BCI babies, however as everyone has pointed out, true hogs should be preserved, moreso than other species (however I do not believe that any species should be hybridized) due to their status in the wild.

Got it. No cross breeding. We have a pure coum. red tail and a pure hogg. We'll keep it that way- I promise. Now for a silly question. What exactly does a BCI stand for again?
BCI = Boa Contrictor Imperator
This subspecies includes Hog Isle Boas, Colombians, Mexicans, and Central American Boas.

then select "Marco" in the left menu...
check this out to see a beautiful snake. also, if your interested, check out the link found in the intro paragraph... definitely a controversy, but no easy answer, i think...

Interesting, but not all Argentines are crosses. That may be his opinion, but it does not seem to be a very educated one (referring to his knowledge of the species, not chemistry). If you have ever seen ANY type of imperator x occidentalis, they look NOTHING like a pure occidentalis. Just as that Hogg x Colombian looked NOTHING like a pure Hogg. Granted that Hoggs cannot be found in the wild anymore... and we will never see any fresh Dumeril genetics. Cross breeding "to save the line" is a weak excuse.

Great conversation- thank you everyone!
I'm at work right now, but I look forward to looking at allboas.com some more later on.
