Out of these reptiles, which do you think is the most intelligent. By intelligence I mean problem solving, remembering, recognizing, etc.
* The catagories are general but just pick what you think is the best answer.:)

I would guess torts... they recognize people, like affection etc.

Some lizards like the bearded dragon act as though they are listening in on your conversation and stare you down.

Monitors all the way! They know your scent and I have actually witnessed a few that come to their owners... expecially when inticed by food. They can be kept around the house like a dog or cat if tame and some love being petted. Some even grow only attached to their keepers, which is actually really weird... they don't let anyone else touch or handle them or they get upset. You have to also notice how they catch their prey in the wild. Komodo dragons will bite the animal and actually wait for it to slowly die and rot before going in to eat it... pretty good patience, wouldn't you say? You just have to think about it. To me they're like snakes with legs, eyelids and ears :)

Wait.. I want to change my answer! Now that I think about it, Iguanas can be potty trained to go on a humans toliet if you know what you're doing! That's gonna have some intelligence to be able to do that.

I think its torts too I saw a guy on t.v. with a tort that would come when he whistled and play tricks on his dog the tort would bump the dog and suck everything in its shell the dog would spin around and just see a shell

I would think tortoises, simply by the fact they outlive all the other species listed and therefore would have a lot longer to 'learn' things...

I'd go for crocodilians..

Monitors can prove to be somewhat intelligent and so do tortoises at times but, nothing come close to a crocodilian.

I'd go for iguanas, they can do basic problem-solving and planning and have excellent memories.

monitors all the way, they're EXTREMELY intelligent. They can be potty trained, they can idenitfy you, walk without leashes, and some come when called

I would say monitors, but i have never been around a crocodilian long enough to know how smart they are. And iguanas are fairly smart too. I guess its a pretty tough choice.interesting thread though.

you didnt have it on the list, but ive noticed thet forest cobras (Naja melanoluca) have an erie sort of "intelligent" way they behave and look at you....sounds silly :)

...Well it's scientifically the crocodilians. Being because their brains are more advanced than any other reptilian and the brain inhabits the cerebral cortex, and from what I know and read they are the only reptilians to have a brain that enables them to have far more than
basic thoughts and regular instincts.
Just the scientific view and not a favoritism vote.

Well i said Alligators, why because i use to have a real big one and i know them all to well.. Not only are they very intelligent, great at remembering things, recognizing things and also very good at being hardheaded, crazy, and very sneaky to boot!! LOL!!
But yeah monitors are very intelligent, and can be down right dog tame pets.. :D

I picked tortoises, because they are smart enough to out live the rest of the reptile world.

Hmm no one's mentioned the escaping ability of a snake, granted, it's a very specialised form of inteligence, but if there's a way out a snake will find it.

well, KrokadilyanGuy3 hit the nail right on the head. It is scientific fact that crocodilians are the most intelligent of all reptiles. And anyone working with crocs, even for a short time, would find this to be true very quickly. Crocs are also more closely related to birds than other reptiles.

other apex predators in the reptile world also show some form of higher intelligence, here are a few examples:

king cobra, reticulated python, komodo dragon, crocodile monitor, anaconda.

They have outlived a lot of other reptiles because they have evolved that way, not necessarily because of brainpower. Intelligence does not determine lifespan or any physical attributes that may develop over time in reptiles.

I'd have to say monitors. They seem to always have the wheels turning. I'm not sure about all pythons but retics seem to be pretty intelligent as well.

wood turtles can surmount a six foot chainlink fence, along with other snapping turtles, but the wood turtle is known to be a great problem solver.
