sav rescue, sorta

hey, in the paper a guy is getting rid of MANY herps one which is a savannah monitor. He said he will sell me if for 20. Now i thought that was low for a sav, but what was weird was the cage was included. He is housing this poor sav in a 10 gallon tank, and the monitor is 1ft. Everyone cross your fingers and HOPE my mom allows me to get it. I only consider this a rescue due to the housing. :w :w :w :w :w :w

P.S. for any of your scared, the face with wings is kinda like an angel thing, so i can get this poor guy:)

You change your mind a lot about what you are going to get. A new approach may be to learn as much as you can about a species of snake/lizard/whatever that is particular to your needs, and availabilities and get it. I hope for the Savannah's sake, that you know how to care for a monitor now, and when it gets to be over 3 ft long.

i was going to get it cause it was living in a 10 gallon tank, otherwise i wouldnt have probably. But it doesnt matter, cause my mom said i have to wait a few months before i can get anything else. And i do know about sav's because i wanted one before.

Well assuming that your mom would have agreed to let you take it. It would be better off right? Chances are that statement is right for the time being. But after awile it is going to command at least a 6X3X2 enclosure. Not to mention going to be costly to feed. Do you have that kind of room or money? All I am saying is, make sure you research and have a good enlosure set up before getting the animal, otherwise, it's going to be in just as much trouble as it was before.

Let's hope someone does HELP out that poor Savannah though.

While I hope the savannah does find a good home, I don't think you would have provided an appropiate one. You seem to be trying to get "rescue" animals (the burm) which is good, but I don't think you are experienced or at least stable enough to keep a burm for it's entire life, nor a savannah which will need a lot of room and be VERY expensive to feed. I'm not bashing you, but I think you should consider and research an animal you are considering getting a LOT more before you actually decide you want one. These animals aren't easy to care for, and as your burm in a morph it is subject to problems a normal isn't, and so you will likely have to pay for other problems it may(will) have like occaisional RIs.
Anyway, hope your mom lets you get another herp soon, something you can keep of course :)

One thing that I find frustrating is monitor husbandry .. not to be rude, but i'd have to say that over 80% of all savanah's in captivity are house badly and are simply put to a slow untimely death..


I now have 6 savanah monitors.. 4 of wich I have had as "rescues" and two wich I have paid for (60 bucks for both).

Here are my thoughs on this issue..

Small enclosures can offer amazing husbandry to your monitor if know what ure doing, it often is not better than a large cage with 95% useless space... (I am not saying they should be kept in small cages..)


Anywho .. not to be rude but Dan and Zoe's advise seem to be very good.. Sav's are not for everyone.. they require specific needs that the majority of ppl don't understand.. (I am still lost when it comes to husbandry .. I have experiences over 15 diference savs.. have had infertile eggs.. have had an eggbound female, have worked man others.. have spent over 1500 on caging and accesories and food ) and yet .. I still feel I have barely scratch the surface of monitor husbandry.


They seem to be a good pet for the simple reason that they are amazingly tough.. they take a long time to die.. it does not mean it is thriving..

Anywho .. If you are going to "rescue" an animal.. make sure it will not simply be housed in a situation where it needs rescuing again..

Reading is learning, Experience is knowledge.. Learn as much as u can before u get u're next retic .. sav, dwarf monitor, caimen, tegue, burmese .. or wich ever next animal u have previously stated to be buying soon..
