by counting scales, i have figured out that my corn mitch (a boys name) may well be a girl. i counted about 90 scales.
i was thinking of a more feminine name?
something beginning with M like mitchelina:)
ah well................actually this might be good for my breeding chances! the corn i was has a much longer tail than this.
btw how accurate is scale counting?

MICHELE!!!!!!!! (if thats how you spell it:) )
I am not even sure what you mean by scale counting. Thats usually done to identify one species from another, or in other species to tell sex but I have never heard of it being used for corns.
What scales are you counting????
Anyways the only methods available are:
1. Probe. Must be done by experienced person, entails the probe being placed into the vent. They count how deep it goes in, but you cannot do this with your eye. Most accurate method aside from breeding. *L* :)
2. Popping....done when the snakes are very young. Not always very accurate...but it works. Less accurate than probing.
3. Tail comparision. This is the LEAST accurate method and I wouldn't count on it....but the males tails are longer, and don't start to taper right away to the tip like the females do. A females tail is shorter, and starts to taper right after the vent ...to the tip.

snakemann: i was thinking of that...
im counting the scales on his tail.....cant spell the word for butt hole:) from his butt hole to the tip of "his" tail.
I don't think that matters even one bit in corns. *L* So although I am sure you had a more than difficult time counting, it most likely means nothing. :(
But you can probably easily find someone experienced in your area to do the probe.

well ive definately heard of it. i used to post on cornsnakes.com im sure if you go there and search for sexing, alot of people talk about it.
<130 - Female
>140 Male
I don't know how accurate the scale counting method is, but you can check out A beginners guide to safe ways of sexing your corn snake
Hope this helped :)
Accurate or not, I just can't see myself holding a little wiggly still long enough to get to 30, let alone 130! Since I don't breed snakes, I just do the tail comparison and my best guesstimate on rescue snakes, or buy from a breeder who is a good popper for my pet snakes.

LMAO... just count the scales on the shed skin... much easier and less messier :D
LOL, I don't always keep rescues long enough for them to shed, and folks do wonder on the sex.
