View Full Version : 5-6 Month Old LG Laying Eggs?

In hindsight we probably had some idea - our female Leopard Gecko has not had much of an appetite and has been clearing our her humid hide for the last week. She looked to be gaining weight in her mid section and my wife thought she looked gravid.

However, she is only supposed to be about 5 to 6 months old and is only about 6 inches long, so we didn't take it seriously.

I sprayed her humid hide last night and nothing was present, but tonight I go back in and find much of the moss spread out of the hide again, so I open it up to put the mosss back in and found two eggs.

IS it possible to have fertile eggs at her age? Is it normal for a leopard gecko to lay eggs this young? I'm not sure what the temperature has been in the hide as she has been tossing the moss out and we don't have an incubator handy to put the eggs into as we weren't expecting anything like this so early.

Any information or help would be appreciated.

she is most likely not 5-6 months old, the are sexually mature at the age of 16 months, though it is not healthy to mate it until it is about 2 years. also i think 6'' is a bit to big for a 5-6 month old leo + females dont usually grow more than 7'' or 8''.
is there a male in the cage? if there is then the eggs are most likely fertile.

That depends, if it is a normal it very well could be 6 inches at 6 months. Most of the normals I have seen have been rather large. Both of my full grown normals are 10 inches, and now with the giants being bred, we'll see them even bigger.

Leopards sexualy mature much faster then 16 months. 6 months old and 6 inches long seems about right if you ask me. I have never seen a loan female lay eggs at this age, but I guess anything is possible.

Just to clarify, she is not a lone female - she is residing with a male, so the eggs are not an unexpected event, just earlier than we had anticipated.

Ah, that certainly explains it. That is about the time females sexually mature, and males are usually mature faster - so they would certainly breed. I'd just keep a very, very close eye on her. Egg binding and other complications are common in very young leos, and that's the reason most people don't breed them until they are around 12 months and at least 40 grams or so.
