View Full Version : Help us!
Hey guys! We need your support in this matter. The BC SPCA is having a poll on whether exotics should be owned or not. We could use any help we can get.
Personally, I voted the testing part.
Big THANKS to all who vote!! Us fellow herpers in BC appreciate it!

They should give some examples of 'exotic pets'... I noticed that a lot of people have said that exotic pets shouldn't be kept period, but I wonder how many of those people actually know what to consider as exotic pets... They're probably thinking of tigers and bears or something...
But I did vote yes, I think.... either that or something about information at time of adoption I think??

Very good point, and I e-mailed them about this.
Thanks for the votes and e-mail.
Yep you're right Kate. They fail to see that even Gerbils, Chinchillas and cockatiels are exotic pets. Education is the key, I say.
Put my 2cent in...i voted :)
I voted "yes". I think that should be the way for adopting any animal, exotic or not - the animal just came from a bad situation, you don't want to send it back into another one... sort of defeates the purpose  Can't believe that the numbers are almost even for voting "yes" and "exotics shouldn't be kept period":(
The problem is that we have a certain lady in BC who is VERY much against exotics, especially reptiles. The herper faction here mainly the WSPCR are constantly in battle with her for good snake publicity. And there seem to be proposed bans popping up all over the place. Luckily the WSPCR have done well in stopping these bans, but of course we could always use more support.

Of course they should! If they wern't allowed in BC, I wouldn't be on this site... and that would mean that there is no point to this site... Isn't that why everyone is here? to admire me? :P

I agree, education is the key... If people don't understand what they're being asked, then how is a proper census supposed to be formed? They should have a list of the animals that THEY consider to be exotic...
Good idea, Gino, let's hope they take the advice.
I also agree with you Linds, although I do wish that animals never had to come from a bad place in the first place!! But since we know that can't be done, it is a good idea to ensure that it's not going to happen again. One day I'll buy a country and I'll adopt all animals and we'll all live happily ever after.... one day....
Anyway, I'd really like to know this woman's reasoning for being completely against all exotics, especially reptiles. Does she actually have people behind her, or is it just her taking a stand? I wonder if she truly understands what exotics really are. Some species of 'domestic' cats [I mean non-big cats, ie: lions, tigers... lol] are actually exotics, but they're no harder or easier to take care of than other cats... And why are people so against reptiles! Augh! If people don't like them, then fine, so be it... I'm not going to push on my interest onto them, but when they start to try to take away our source of interest then that's just not fair.
I don't know if I'm making any sense, I'm just completely annoyed by the whole thing.
Bottom line: Yes, Education really IS the key!
Kate
PS - Yes, Dan, we're all here to admire you...

Voted........YES
I voted for the "we should be allowed to keep what ever we want" as soon as you start getting restrictions you also start getting animals banned outright. the less government interference the better.
