Frog Eggs in winter?!!

I was recently field herping here in northern Spain, and I came across something quite peculiar. I found amphibian eggs, always cool but the strange part is, it is in the middle of winter and it is about 2 Celsius, so how is this possible? I have heard about tadpoles that can go through winter, but eggs? Any thoughts?

I don't know about in Spain, but here in North Carolina (and much of the US) salamanders often breed and lay eggs in winter. Is it possible they are salamander eggs?

Yeah, you may be right. Although, i am probably wrong about this, but i thought that salamanders and newts lay their eggs in the mud. Do you know anything about this? It is definitely possible though.

Yes, that is possible, though i thought salamanders lay eggs in the mud not like frogs which lay them attached to plants and things floating in the water. I don't know tho, so you could be right. Here is a pic if that helps. I found it half way in the water half out, in a very shallow spot.

Hmm fair point. Those look awfully like frog eggs. I've looked online, but I haven't found anything.

I just realized a posted the same message twice... I'm dumb.
Back to the subject though, does anybody have any ideas? I just found out my sister actually took some of the eggs (not my doing) which makes this a very pressing problem. What are they?!!! Any ideas?

Have you looked at range maps for amphibians common in your area? That could narrow it down.

Hey, so sorry i haven't updated in a while. The eggs hatched a few weeks ago, and are growing like normal tadpoles. I have kept both frog and toad tadpoles in the past, and they are growing just like them, except the frog and toad tadpoles hatched in April... so are these salamanders? Does anybody know a way to differentiate the type of amphibian by the tadpoles? When i get the chance i will post a pic of them

I don’t know but I do know that newts and salamanders lay eggs in the water attached to plants just like frogs — not in the mud.

Maybe they are salamander eggs because I think frog eggs wouldn't survive.
