View Full Version : Any way to ID Snake Egg species?
Hi all, I find these eggs on my land pretty regularly but don't know whose they are (species). I have a lot of Black Rat Snakes so that would be my first guess, but have also seen Eastern Kingsnakes in this specific area. I've not seen a copperhead in awhile but there were some out this way. Garter snakes and Green Grass snakes snakes too but I think they live breed...
Aside from the very obvious "wait and see what comes out"... any way to ID these?
Images didn't post, let me try again...

I'm not seeing any photos. But, copperheads (and all the rest of our North American pit vipers) give live birth. The only venomous snake in the US that lays eggs is the coral snake.
As Eminart said, Copperheads give live birth. Water Snakes and Garter Snakes give live birth as well.
How big are the eggs? It could be king or rat snake eggs. Could also be Racer eggs. Depending on the size, they could be skink eggs.

If you can get a photo of them with something for scale, we might be able to at least eliminate some species. For instance, some snakes lay eggs that have a granular surface, and size/shape would tell us some things.
I posted pictures but something is weird with my account because I am so new... but here's the written version:
They are about 1.75-2" oblong. Clearly snake eggs (leathery, not hard). They are solid white. I can go check them out for other details but they seemed pretty smooth to me.
Oh, it is letting me post now- so here are images (I hope).
