Is there much of a size difference between a large rat and an extra large rat?

Maybe a bit--L=180-279g vs. XL=280-400g --but the extra large rats are normally retired breeders and they tend to be on the fatty side. If your snake is feeding on XL rats, you might consider using young rabbits instead and skip the fat.

Well I have a Male that's a tad over 6ft and his thickest part of his body is a bit thicker than a large rat. It does leave a decent bump though. He is around 4 1/2lbs to 5lbs. I figured when I do feed XL rats I could rotate rats and 1lb rabbits to balance cost and carry the diet.

You could also consider chicks as a varying food source, fyi.

What kind of snakes are you feeding? Large rats are a decent meal for most species. I agree that rabbits are another option for larger snakes but they can be expensive.
