So this is really strange - I found this lizard in the backyard of my friend's house and I was surprised as you never see lizards in this area (Oregon - cold and rainy!). Especially like this -- this guy was docile and slow-moving. I picked him up and held him for a while. Notice he has 4 "fingers" and toes instead of 5 like many lizards have.

Out of curiosity, did this creature feel moist when you touched it?

If so, it may actually be a newt or a salamander, not a lizard. I can't specify what type as I am not an expert on herp identification. However, by the looks of it, I have doubts that it's actually a lizard.

It's a newt, which is a type of salamander.

Looks like a rough-skinned newt. (Taricha granulosa)
Nice find!

Thanks all! You're right, that's what it is :) Felt like a lizard (not wet at all) but I guess that's why they call em "rough-skinned." Haha.

They really look otherworldly... I really need to get out to your part of the country.
