Where to locate thermostat sensor

I just received a Boaphile snake cage which is 5 feet long and 2 feet wide. 17.5 inches high. They come in two sections which are bolted together to make that size. The left side has a radiant heat panel on top and an under tank heater on the bottom. The right side is the cool side. I'm debating where to locate the sensor?
I've seen some vids on you tube where they place the sensor under the UTH but that makes no sense to me with a radiant heat panel. Should I drill a hole in the cage and locate it somewhere in the middle? Or on the wall in the warm end? Any advice would be appreciated.

Am not terribly experienced, but I'd have each on separate thermostats. Probe for RHP goes a couple inches below the panel. My plastic cages came with appropriately placed holes for the probe to go through, but there's no issue with drilling additional holes if necessary.

I just chatted with the builder on Facebook. He said to drill a hole just under the RHP and let it dangle a few inches below that. Basically, what you said. So that's what I'll do. I will keep an eye on the cooler side though and make corrections if needed. Thanks for the input.

I drilled my first holes high, near the RHP and let the probes dangle down to where they sit on top of the hides to get a better temperature down below.


If you keep your probe up high, then use a laser temp gun to get the temperature down at the hide level. This will result in a higher temp on your probe since it is so close to the RHP.


The next cages I put together, BoaMaster, will have the probe hole drilled down low, at the level of the hides and not dangling down from on high.

Low is probably better. I may try both. An extra hole wouldn't hurt. Looks like that thing could use more ventilation anyways.
