View Full Version : First snek!
Hey everyone! if you didn't catch my intro, my name is Will and I am in the process of purchasing my first snake from Morphmarket.com. If all goes well I will be the new daddy to a beautiful Albino Okeetee Corn Snake. For the time being I have set up a 20L Zilla enclosure with the plan to upgrade to a 48x24x15 AP enclosure after a couple months.
I will be using this thread as place to keep track of how things are going and growing!

I tried to post photos, but photobucket sucks now, so I have deleted my photobucket account and will need to find a new host.

That's one gorgeous corn snake Will. You may want to consider adding even more hides and covering 3 sides of your enclosure to make the snake feel a little more secure.

Thank you EL Ziggy! I agree, I was thinking of some black construction paper or maybe some paint. I do plan to do more foliage in there with another hide, I am also going to keep it in a small tub first since it's still a baby. I also want to be sure the environment is stable before introducing the snake.
Bummer news... The snake was already sold:no: so the search continues...

Glad to see you made a decision and are making progress with your setup. Setting everything up ahead of time will make life easier on you and much easier on your snake.
I agree with Ziggy, but you're already planning on a few tweaks so I won't continue to beat that drum.
I think you'll find your new corn will spend a lot of time burrowing while young and aspen is a great choice for substrate. I like to use it for young colubrids, but I personally don't care for it overall. But, it's not about me, it's about the snakes.
Anyway, I'm rambling at this point...
Sorry that one sold, but there's another with your name on it somewhere. Any chance there are any upcoming reptile expos coming up in your area?
Ok, so I did some diligent research on the BOI and found a reliable breeder, and just Purchased my first snake! Its an Abbots Okeetee 100% het amel female from VMS Herp.

Thanks! There are some towards the end of the year but I made a purchase today so we shall see what the future has in store!

No worries I finally found one equally as nice, at least I think so...

Awsome, really like the colors. I just got my first BP(first snake actually) and having a lot of fun, so much to learn. Hoping to get in the required number of posts to post up some pics. Since I’m something of a snake nut I check out everything. Look forward to seeing your progress. Congrats on the new snake.

Thanks everyone! Im excited, she will be here on the 11th!
Congrats! You've picked on of my favorite types of cornsnake. They're beautiful.

Cool! It reminds me of the rat snakes I used to play with in the the yard growing up, only brighter!
Makes sense. Corn snakes are rat snakes after all.
Very cool! Corns are one of the best species for someone just starting out. Looking forward to seeing pics once you get it.

Sounds good, I needed something hardy as a first snake.
Looking forward to posting pics, I still have a bit to do though before she gets here.
I picked up a fridge/freezer combo for the office so I can keep and thaw frozen mice, although I was considering starting a colony of mice to feed live. Im also considering a rack instead of an enclosure. This way I can keep multiple kinds of corn snakes. Still doing research on it though, I prefer to do whats best for the snake, but I don't have room for more than two large AP enclosures.
On the 20L i'm using now, I covered the screen some, and wrapped a poly insulation cloth around half of the enclosure (I will be painting it soon as well) to box it in a bit. I also added a long cardboard tube for a hide that reaches both cool and warm sides of the enclosure. I still need to go pick up a new laser temp gun too, mine isn't working right.
Painted the outside of the enclosure black and added some hides, should I put anything else in there?

Naw, you've got everything covered as long as there's a heat source for the cage (besides the bulb, that is).

Looks great!
Thanks everyone for help and encouragement, today is the day! I pick up Mara (snakes new name!) from the airport at 10:30, I asked the breeder to have fed ex hold the snake there because it's so hot here at the moment. I will post pictures when she arrives and possibly a short video.
Well... Mara never arrived at the airport, apparently there was a mechanical malfunction on the plane and she’s sitting in Colorado. I let the breeder know and he said she’s packed well and it shouldn’t be a problem, FedEx says she’ll be delivered tomorrow morning.

Well, at least she's okay. And by the way, Mara is a pretty awesome name for a snake.
Is she there yet? Is she there yet? Is she there yet? ... ;)

She’s here! I posted a link to the photo but not sure what happened to the post. It didn’t show ip afterwards. But yes Mara arrived alive and very well, she’s fast and flighty but healthy. She’s enjoying the dim room checking out her enclosure.

Thanks! I’m using Aspen at the moment. Not sure what I want to use in the permanent enclosure yet.

Ok cool. Aspen is a great choice for young corns, they tend to burrow a lot when young.
I only asked because in the pic it almost looked like aquarium gravel (on mobile, so pic is small).
Keep us posted on progression!
Mara is doing good, she's eating well. uses all three hides, roams around at night, and snake excrement is a lot more than expected!

Very nice! I'm glad to read Mara is off to a good start. If she's eating well and peeing/pooping that's a good sign.
Thanks for the update!
