View Full Version : Sniper is horny
First time with this so I got to ask. Sniper is not eating, only been a month and hes 5.5ish years old and healthy, cage comditions are good so Im not worried about the non eating. Lately hes cruising all over his enclosure wrecking everything. Hes been at the doors constantly looking to get out. And today I find sperm plugs. Should I try to breed him or will he settle down anytime soon.Little Miss lives above him and shes turning a year old in two days so I dont think shes scenting or anything and shes no where near old enough. Just not sure if I should be concerned. Thanks for any input.
You shouldn't be overly concerned. They will do this even with no females in the vicinity. He isn't eating because he has other urges that override food. It will pass with time. The only thing to really watch for would be nose rub during this time and if that begins to occur, something that can sometimes help is to lower the temps by a couple of degrees all around, but I would not suggest doing so proactively.

I don't keep boas, but I don't see any reason to breed him. If everybody bred their captive males who are in a food strike with "other things" on their minds we'd have an out of control snake population. Just because he WANTS to find a mate doesn't mean he HAS to find a mate.
My BP, Borneo STP and hognose males all ate this week for the first time since March or earlier. They all happened to reach breeding size (barely) this year, so they all went off food for a while. None were bred, all are doing well.

Could this be why my hog island is acting funny? He is always the best eater of the bunch and refused food. He's been really active, more than usual for him even. I don't know what a sperm plug looks like.
Snipers been eating again now for a few weeks. Though he still won't eat his large rats. Now he seems to only take small rats. He's still healthy and his constant activity has slowed down. Sawl cool now..

you didn't say how old your male is?males can mature from two years old. sperm plugs look a bit like a slug thats died from slug pellets all gooey ,google it and theirs pictures on there.
i often see them on my males sometimes on him self where he has been coiled or just on the bark or even the water dish . my motley male goes off his food in breeding season but my other males are fine. as you know all snakes are so different from each other
