I'm thinking about getting a corn snake but I'm not sure about doing so since I have young children and have never had a snake before. Any advice?

Welcome and best wishes Aah. Corn snakes can't do any harm to your children and should make a great family pet. My advice would be to do lots of research before purchasing an animal, set-up your enclosure a few days prior to getting your animal, buy from a reputable breeder and enjoy this wonderful hobby!

See if you can handle the snake before you buy, see if you can buy a yearling or adult animal that you know can be handled (either by word of someone you trust, or by handling yourself)

That's the only way to make sure about the temperament of the snake... corns are generally well tempered, but asshats do exist between them :)

So if I get a baby what is the recommended size tank for them

Enclosure size is totally up to you A. Some people prefer to start hatchlings in smaller tubs or enclosures. Others, like myself, will start them in adult enclosures and just provide lots of cover and hides.

Aspen is good, easy to clean up, though some folks simply use newspaper or even paper towels.
