View Full Version : help to identify
hello.
I have bought my python as second hand. The seller didn't want keep he and sold it to me. And I tried sex it (there is a video) and discuss it on other forum and they said it's female.
Seller also said it's Morelia spilota cheynei . And I have read that babies of Morelia spilota cheynei is not as bright as adult especially in a wild and colors will be bright at 2 years old. Also the article said babies of Morelia spilota cheynei very similar to morelia spilota variegata and as far as I know morelia spilota harrisoni is very similar to morelia spilota harrisoni.
So there is 2 options I nave not bright Morelia spilota cheynei or morelia spilota harrisoni.
Take a look at photos. All photos was taken with LED light. 1 photo with sun light.

That looks like a Morelia spilota harrisoni. Harrisoni used to be variegata and they are the same.

As far as I know variegata it's other species and real variegata costs more than harrisoni but looking the same so harrisoni pushed variegata away from markets.
And what about colors ? Don't cheynei gain color to 2 years old ?
And look at that adult cheynei , looks pretty similar to mine

With all the morphs and crosses the waters have become very muddied in terms of what's pure and what's not. Your carpet appears to have a strong Harrisoni influence but without accurate lineage information it's difficult to say with certainty exactly which Morelia ssp you have. A lot of breeders will provide detailed lineage records for their carpets. Without these records it should be considered an undocumented carpet python or a carpet python of unknown lineage. For example, here's the lineage chart for my JCP. He's from the 2015 WL clutch.

pretty snake, regardless of the specific species or morph. Very nice for $30.

Oh that's great gene lines.
BTW I have read in nature there is cross breading too.
Any way can I expect more yellow in a future ?

Depending on the species and genes, possibly not. You’d really have to see the parents to know this.

I can't. Seller is 600 km away and don't have a phone who was he buying from. He just bought a snake as a toy I think and didn't care who is it.

They are one in the same. The name changed in 2006 from variegata to harrisoni, along with the common name (from Irian Jaya Carpet python to Papuan Carpet Python) and that's why you don't see variegata around anymore...because it is old terminology. If there is a price difference, there's no valid reason for it other than someone trying to gain a few dollars. I am confident that there is heavy harrisoni influence in there, but like the others noted there's no way to know purity of your snake and it very well could be a cross. As far as colouration, harrisoni hatchlings tend to have a lot more reddish and brownish colours than cheynei.
Look at that Irian Jaya
