For the last two months my corn snake has been partially swallowing and then spitting out her food. She has been eating small frozen rats for a couple years now. I even went up to medium size but sometimes she would struggle with it so we went down to the smaller size. Two months ago I fed her as usual, she struck and started eating and had the rat 1/2 way down and it came back up. I waited a couple days and tried again. Same thing happened. She seems to be hunting in her cage. I know she is hungry. She strikes, spins, starts eating, then spits it back out. I have changed the brand of rats in case there was an issue with the first and that has not helped. I make sure the rats are warmed enough but not too hot. Please help!

What does the snake weigh? And what do the rats weigh? I personally have never fed any of my corns (though no longer keep corns) anything larger than large mice. I also feed my adult Kingsnake large mice. He's almost 700 grams and eats weekly and is in great shape and beautifully proportioned with great muscle tone. The corns I kept in the past never required bigger than a large mouse as adults either.

I have never weighed her. Never thought to do it. I just went by the size of her body. As she stared getting bigger I increased the size of the food. The rat last night was the size of a large mouse. I’ll try to go down in size even more. I’m just worried something is wrong internally.

How far does the snake get it down? After a regurge it's advised to wait 2 weeks before trying to feed again.

Feed her mice.
