I took a baby rat...(about an inch and a quarter)... to a next door neighbor.

She FRIEKED!.... But when she opened the door...the odor of dog urine nearly knocked me over!!!

That's FUBAR! (I don't care who are!)

I don't get it, these weirdos have lived there over a month, and I've never seen a dog outside???.

I'm not lying, I'm not exaggerating.. These people are mentally unstable!!!

Why did you take the rat over? I am missing some context.

I was kinda testing the waters to see who might babysit if I go to the hospital.

well, it doesn't sound like they will be a good pet babysitter. Think of what would have happened if you took a snake over there!

Well, when I was in the hospital for 10 days, she fed my cat, and gave it bottled water.

I didn't know I was going to be admitted for that long when I went. I don't know what might happen if I go back, so I'd kinda like to make arrangements beforehand.

I have COPD, emphysema, low vitamin D and Calcium, a possible fungal blood infection, and a so far undiagnosed mass and hole in my left lung.

What's really killing me is a sudden onset of nerve pain, that is keeping me from walking as much as I probably should.

Well you had to get someone short notice I suppose lol, sorry to hear about your health... Hope things pick up... Can a relative not take care of your animals or is there nobody nearby?

I can take the rats to my mom. My snake would be OK if she would hurry up and shed so I can feed her before I go. My turtle ought to be Ok for nearly a week. My betta, IDK, maybe 5 days?

My cat...I'll just put him outside and let him steal the neighbors cat food or catch birds. Most of the neighbors know my cat anyway. He sits out in the road, and makes them all drive around him. If a strange car shows up, he'll get out of the road.

As a matter of fact, used to be most of my neighbors knew my snake as well...( and a lot had held her.)

The rats are going to be the biggest problem. Mom and Pop have a tendency to visit pretty frequently when let out, but their 12 babies are just now starting to eat food, and become handfuls!

Lol, yeah cats can pretty much look after themselves they're more intelligent than people think they just don't see the point in taking orders... They're like... Bi***h pleeease, I'm top of the food chain I don't need me no human :') and then when you put the food out they're your best friend again lol. Rats I'm not familiar with buty sister has kept them and says they are very intelligent, they can learn tricks and are very loving... Although I once heard a retic breeder say his big male breeder data gave much worse bites than his big female retics. I think with rats being seen as vermin there's a stigma attatched but I hear pet rats are actually fastidiously clean!! The description of their bite kind of put me off though lol. But then again I've had dogs and they can bite much worse I suppose, I love animals but the rats tail I can't get over it gives me the creeps I can't get past the look of a rat in the street lol, a shame because they sound amazing, they don't sound boring like a hamster or guinea pig, they sound more social and interesting :)

I hope you feel better and don't get stuck in the hospital Doug. Having pets adds to the stress when you have health issues going and have to worry about finding care for them. Hopefully the neighbors don't mind reptiles. After all, snakes eat rats, and they don't like rats!

Great solution let your cat do more damage to the wild bird population. I don't know how anyone can have an issue with exotic keepers whilst there are ten times the irresponsible cat owners in the world.

Well...actually, I've reconsidered, and I'm thinking about just getting a great big bowl of food, and leaving the toilet seat up...(Sammy drinks out of it all the time)... Also, he has a litter box..he knows what it is, where it is, and how to use it(hejust prefers the great outdoors!)

Sammy hasn't killed any birds ( that I know of) in a LOOOOOONG time..... ( I said he USED to!)

And...A few years ago, I went out of town for 10 days, I think I've changed the litter box once since then.

Trust me...no offense taken, and no disagreement here....But!!! My cat is semi-feral. Would you have me CAGE him for no reason? He's not killing endangered species, yet...on this very forum, I was chastised for killing a common snake that was!

Yes, I think you should keep your car indoors. It is hardly without reason as domesticated cats are a huge problem for native bird populations. There is no way you can say what a cat is killing outdoors, and I doubt you know which birds are threatened anyhow. Yes you and your cat should not kill endangered species, or any wild species at all. The best solution is to hire a pet sitter to stop in and check on things, if you don't have a friend that will. If you can't afford a pet sitter then maybe it is time to reduce the amount if pets you own.

I'm actually very knowledgeable on threatened and endangered species of all sorts. Fairly confident on which are thriving, and I know my cat. He would be fine either way.

The bigger problem is how to get my car in the house!!!! LOL!!! JK.

BTW: Birds don't get killed and eaten by cats without leaving evidence....soooo....I know that too, and which endangered/ threatened are in my area.

RAD House

I think the more relevant question is how did these become endangered? For many song bird species a large part of the answer is domestic cats, so as more irresponsible owners let their cats roam free more species will become endangered. I will not indulge asinine statements such as I know my cat and cats always leave evidence for a owner to see.

Doug 351

Asinine???? Asinine is your assumption that I don't know what I'm talking about and you do.

You care to pony up any proof that irresponsible domesticated cats are responsible for driving ANY BIRD SPECIES ANYWHERE to endangered???

Perhaps you should table your ASSumptions, and do a little research. Habitat destruction and humans are the main causes of species being endangered.

The passenger pigeon was not put into extinction by house cats.

RAD House

A passenger pigeon is not a song bird, and yes there are many reasons animals are becoming endangered. This by no uncertain terms means we should ignore an easily avoidable solution to one of these pressures. Your statements were silly and didn't deserve a response. A little light reading for you, it is pretty well known problem.

To be fair....I DID say anywhere, but...REALLY??? Islands? I don't live on a frigging island....not physically or mentally.

Soooo...doesn't it still come down to MAN'S interference, moreso than the cats? We weren't talking about releasing feral cats on islands....just letting a native outdoor cat run around in its backyard.

And trust me...the only endangered species of birds in my area are bald eagles. My cat is not stupid enough to try to take one down!

You insult both my intelligence and MY CAT'S ...he likes to eat doves, which have populations in the millions. He's also smart enough to just steal cat food, than hunt birds. Not surprisingly, you chose to focus on what ISN'T going to happen. I said I was going to keep my OUTDOOR cat indoors...but you carry on.

Good day, sir...get a life.

To quote the Texas parks and wildlife "Examples of federally listed species in north Texas are the black-capped vireo, golden-cheeked warbler, and the Texas poppy mallow." Maybe you are not as aware as you believe and have no idea what can happen. Also only one of those articles had to do with an island. I suggest you read deeper into the implications of said articles than just the title.

I hardly think the one not throwing the tantrum is a "weanie". Using facts and reason do not make me judgemental. Honestly if you were mature enough to admit you were wrong, this would have been an entirely different conversation.

OK...I asked you to stop . This thread was not about cats.Perhaps you're jealous because you are one, but not a TOM CAT!!!

I could look up the ranges of those birds ( If I gave a hoot hoot hoot...) but I know what is in my backyard. Again, I already said I was going to keep my cat inside, so... who's the one with the problem here?

Can you read? I SAID^ "YOU'RE RIGHT!" But that wasn't good enough for you.

MATURE??? I'm not only much older than you, but much more mature.

Again, have a nice day, go away, get a life.

Asking me to stop and admitting you were wrong are hard to take seriously when you are at the same time flinging insults and telling me you know better. I think you make it quite clear maturity does not come with age. If you want me to stop, I recommend you stop trying to give orders and be reasonable. For the record I would never describe myself as Tom cat or any felid for that matter.

How about you both cut it out and end this or take it to PM. I will not hesitate to close this thread if just one more post occurs between the two of you about this. The discussion has become personal, unfriendly and completely sidetracked. All done, guys.

The other mods did a good job.

However I don't think this thread needs to continue to exist.
