View Full Version : Dumerils Boa: Inquiry
While pondering what my next noodle would be (~year), I had the chance to hold a Dumeril's Boa during a Zoo visit. A bit flighty as it hadn't been handled too much, but a lovely animal. I think I may put off the BHP for a bit more.
The questions:
1: Caging:
For a cage, I would probably get what I already have for my Woma. AP Cages T20. (~6'*2'*2') A bit spacious/tall for a Dumerils, but plenty of hides as with the Woma. The temperature range is a bit lower and smaller, but with room temperature being what it is should be fine. And a larger bowl than before to allow soaking (tendency has been mentioned) and help humidity 40%-60% range. Do we see any issue with this for a male ~hatchling to adult?
2: Colors/ Patterns
I see claims of this, but nothing more than really different shades. More muddier or pinkish than others. Another claims a "sunglow" is also out there...
I also have one source claiming that males have a more distinct pattern than females.
Is there any truth to any of this?
3: Breeder
Would anyone have a breeder to suggest? I am going to NARBC in October so I may meet one there, but in case a referral is appreciated.

If you do decide on a Dumeril's, I think you'll be a very happy clam. I'm obsessed with mine. I haven't found anything about Dumeril's morphs; I think they just come in varying shades. As for patterning, I have a female with very distinct markings, as defined as any male I've seen. So, I'd imagine that's not true. Although, she could just be exceptional, and always will be to me ;)
I'm sure you know, but they love to burrow, so a deep substrate is definitely necessary. You'll often walk by his enclosure to just a tiny nose poking out. Also, not sure if it's a coincidence, but I recently replaced all her hides with much smaller ones. It seems to have made her alot more calm. I'm actually astounded by her temperament. I've had her less than six months and she's become the calmest, most docile animal ever. I took her to the park today and she let two children manhandle the crap out of her without getting nervous at all.
They really are fantastic beasts. You will not be disappointed.

I have seen Hypos of this snake, so they do exist. I thought about getting one once, but they are a bit thicker bodied than I'd prefer. Sounds like you have everything all thought out Though! Good luck and looking forward to seeing pics of whatever you end up getting =)

More emphasis on burrowing. Ok.
The current thought is doing something similar with my Woma. I have a layer of newspaper and she always made her way under it. I have started creasing the upper layer's edges and she gets under it and the substrate.
But the temperament is one of the draws.
Thanks.

The thicker body is the other draw.
Thanks for the input.

They do use height if provided as well. They have a pair in an 8-9' high enclosure in a local wildlife park and they use all the levels provided.
Very beautiful snakes - would love one to be honest but don't think I have the space.

I have seen that mentioned as well. Currently working out something with dad for something based on brown PVC tubes to be broken down easily for cleaning.
Not like you need a bed. =P
Thanks.
