View Full Version : Urates
What exactly are urates and how can I prevent them? I know you're not supposed to massage them out of your snake but I did. She seems fine but I was surprised how big they were. They were the size of a large dogs feces but they were all white.

urates are a natural waste item in all snakes there is no way to prevent them. and if there solid white theat a good thing.
Ditto what Jason said. Urates are just excretions of uric acid, you don't want to prevent them. Bloods are kind of freaky with their urates, they build up for quite a while I've noticed, and you can feel them clearly and even hear them scraping around sometimes  It was a little alarming the first time I experienced this but soon came to learn this was perfectly normal :) Just let nature take its course ;)

Snakes do also pass a certain amount of liquid urine as well, some species more than others.

Indeed, its always a real blessing when you walk into the room and see a steamed up cage, then open it to find your snake laying in a quarter inch of urine... LOL thank god someone invented the litter dam! :p

Question for everyone regarding actual liquid waste produced by Blood Pythons...
Do you guys find that your Bloods seem to produce a lot of liquid urine in comoparison to other snakes?
Mine definitely do.
And, regarding the solid urates, I have a pic of a very large accretion which I removed manually from my female. There was no way that she could have passed it unaided. I'll try to post the pic one of these days.
