View Full Version : Red tail boa wanted
Hey I own a few ball pythons and I want to get a Boa Constrictor. I don't know much about the different types and differences between them. I'd like to get a bigger sized one. And I'm not looking to spend a fortune. So if anyone who breeds boas wouldn't mind educating me a little. I'd appreciate it.

How big are you looking for? What is max size?
We need a bit more information as there is a wide range of boas from 3ft dwarfs to 10ft BCC
A BCI is a loose term for Colombian or mix boa while a BCC is a true red tail but tend to get bigger. Now getting pure BCC is harder to do as with many morphs and breeding bloodlines are very mixed.
If you want a true red tail you'd have to find a breeder who can prove the purity. If you want a morph BCI but are concerned about adult size having information on the parents size will give you a good idea who big they will get. There is a range 6-9ft. If you want smaller dwarf boas are a good option but again you'd want someone reputable so they are true dwarfs
Yeah I was pretty vague. 6-9ft is perfect. I hear in some rare bloodlines some can get bigger around 13ft. I guess BCC would what I'm leaning towards. Not looking for any expensive morphs. Although I do like the arabesque boas ALOT. I like the red tail more than orangeish tails of a BCI.

Most morphs you'll find are BCI not BCC. Now days most BCC that are coveted are the pure ones. Letting natures beauty shine rather then selective breeding. BCIs range a lot in size depends what kind of blood they have.
Okay. Thanks a bunch just trying to get my feet wet and get into boas. I'll keep researching!

As far as price goes, BCC's are always higher than BCI's, mainly due to supply/demand.

Not always, BI morphs are often much higher than the average BC, especially new morphs or certain combos. There are also normal BIs bred for quality than can be $300+ with no morph, though a good quality-bred BC can easily be $600+ average seems to be $200-300. So, comparing normals, the average wild type BI will be cheaper than the average BC, but BI in general are more expensive.
I wouldn't get a boa constrictor of any species/locality and expect a 10-footer, average is only about 6'-8' for both BI and BC. Some localities of BC will also stay smaller, so getting a BC locality won't guarantee you a "monster." If 6'-9' is fine for you, you shouldn't have any problems sizewise with any of the boas, though BC are a lot more sensitive about prey size and will require a more careful diet regimen than a BI would (though imo both should still be fed the same way).
