View Full Version : Rat too large

I gave my young female bull snake a small rat today. She immediately took it, but after getting it about 90% swallowed apparently realized/decided it was too large and spit it back out. The rat was rather slimy with saliva, so I rinsed it off in the sink and gave it to the Dumeril's. My question is how long to wait before feeding the bull snake again? Since it wasn't actually swallowed and started on the digestion process should it be treated like a regurge, or offer her another meal next week, or even sooner?

If it never fully swallowed it I give mine a couple of days.

Could feed immediately after if you wanted to, but I would wait until next scheduled feed...easier to keep everything straight. :)

Like the others have said, I'd wait until her next scheduled feeding day. I've had my male bull spit out some of the larger medium rats I've given him. He usually just gets to the shoulders before he spits them out. I've learned to not give him mediums much larger than 100g.

I was thinking to wait for next week, not like missing one meal will do her any harm. She has shown a huge preference for rats over mice, so I've been feeding her baby rats. This time around the newer babies looked too small, so I figured I'd offer one that looked big enough to be weaned was still nursing. She hit it immediately, but apparently it was just a little too much for her to get down.
The only other similar incident IME was the wee tangerine milk snake that apparently had regurged a pinky mouse, then died not long afterward. I didn't think this was as serious, but thought I'd ask just in case.

Always better to ask when you're unsure. It's what this forum is all about. :)

Here's the other side of the coin: C'mon guys....they're SNAKES!

Whatever.... I'm not getting TOO involved!
