Another snake suggestion post

Yeah I'm doing that again :yes:
I've been casually thinking about a second snake (I did post about a sand boa I'm interested in). But other than that if he falls thru or I decide not to go with a sand boa I need another direction. But what I'm not sure. I am really enjoying my cape house snake. He's a great little snake. :crazy2:
But what to get? I'm limited on size (20 gallon long) and I know I want something that's ok with lower humidity and not a hognose. I think I've limited myself a bit. But I'll be fine if I don't get another. My house snake will get all the attention :D

Man, my first suggestion was going to be a hognose. :D A garter snake would do well in that. Spotted pythons are neat and stay really small (they take medium adult mice as adults) so one of those would fit. So would a rosy boa.

Yeah I'm not certain I'm entirely comfortable with the idea of another hog. My experience with my hog wasn't good due to a number of things including where I got him from. I do like the idea of a tri color hognose but those I want to be able to hold and see in person first.

I've never kept any but stuff in antaresia seem really neat like childrens pythons and spotted pythons like serpentinedream said.

Do you like king snakes or corn snakes?

TLD I've thought about another house snake, a black one :D but I thought I'd look a little into other snakes before settling on another house snakes. Rosies are a thought.

I like corns, but don't know much about kings. But I thought corns at least would need something bigger than a 20 long.

Young corns and kings are fine in a 20 long. Adults would be more comfortable in a 40 gallon breeder. You can keep them in a 20 long but they'll be a bit cramped. There is some variance in size but most corns are around 4.5 feet and kings between 4 and 6 feet depending on the subspecies.

Not too many kings will cross 4 feet. Heck, the majority of adults I held barely cross 3 feet (ie- they were around 100 - 110 cm). There are just a few species that will in fact hit 4+ feet on a more than occasional basis but most stay between 3 and 4 ft, some below 3 ft.

Still 20 gallon terrarium is too small for any ADULT king, milk, rat, or racer snake. If you're OK to upgrade the size in about 2 years, then by all means go for it. But that does commit you to this change, you really can't hold such species in a 20 gallon for a long term.

For reference, I have a 1 year 9 months old, 2'10" (85 cm), MBK in a ~40 gallon (80x45x45cm) and it's visibility getting too small for him during his active times. By end of this year he will need more space, especially more depth.

Small kingsnake species will fit the bill. Grey banded kings average around 3ft. Males being under that. I personally really like grey banded, don't see them up here much.

I am not against moving up to a 40 breeder but I'd want to wait until I am living in a bigger maybe not renting place. I already have a 20 set up with one residence and Thor is needing to move into a ten shortly. I wasn't certain he will eventually need a 20 long too. Which reminds me I need to go shopping for someon giving away a ten.
Before I go completely off topic for the moment I was planning a rack/shelving unit that'll hold three 20 longs.
I'll look into the grey banded kings. I don't know much about kings but I do admire their beauty.

Don Soderberg will have some gray banded kings later this summer if you want to contact him to get on his reservation list. He has a license to collect them and has some interesting stock that he found from around Texas, including some granites, light and dark phases and leucistics.
