I've recently come into possession of a 40 gallon breeder aquarium, and would really appreciate a list of snakes that could live in there it's whole life. I've been thinking about a hogenose, but I would like some other options in case I decide against it. I really appreciate all the help

If it had to be a lifetime enclosure I'd go with a king snake or MBK. If you can upgrade to a larger enclosure in a couple of years I'd look into a carpet python or bull snake. I'm a bit biased though. :)

What does a 40g breeder equate to in WxDxH? Apologies we don't use volume as a descriptor over here.

36" wide, 18" long, 16" tall.

Colubrids are your best bet, cornsnakes, smaller ratsnakes, kingsnakes, gartersnakes. Childrens pythons could also live in there, and maybe some of the smallest boa species like rosy boas, sand boas.

A smaller/medium colubrids or female hog are your best bet. Snakes that require cooler temps and ambient humidity. Hotter temps and higher humidity is much harder to maintain in glass tanks.

You could do any number of species. Rat snakes, king snakes, gopher snakes, basically most of the NA colubrids would do well in such a tank.

I think hogenose is a good choice. But I recommend king snakes.
