Went to a local expo today to pick up a few supplies. Stumbled across this little worm at one of the tables. Needless to say it was a big surprise. It hasn't yet been sexed it's WC and the guy said "I don't want to say this but it's a bit psycho" The surprising thing is he was only $400 which I thought would have been a lot more. Don't want a 12' psycho so I moved on. But was really cool to see one in person.

Psychotic...that describes three of my juveniles during the mass feeding of all guests: the two that won't eat, the Dumerils and the Hognose; and the Bull that went out of its was to strike at anything after I offered the third tidbit of the night.

My snake hook paid for itself tonight! :freakedout:

What exactly was it? A psycho 12' snake covers quite a broad range, lol.

Olive python? Then its not WC as even cb ones can't be exported from Australia. If it is WC then it's a good job you did pass otherwise you could gave been in a world of trouble!

Honestly as well, my two babies are 'pyschos' but adults very rarely are. Olives are known as the gentle giants for a reason. They are very very viv defensive at the moment - when I'm in the snake room all I can hear is them striking the glass - but a) if I stick my hand in the strikes have no real intent behind them and b) the moment they're out they handle just fine.

As they grow and realise everything isn't out to kill them they'll soon cease the show I'm sure.

Most Australian python sp. are very defensive as juveniles but calm right down. I'd have taken a punt on him. If he didn't calm down you would have known by the time it was 5' or so and wouldn't have made a loss selling him on.

I asked the sex and the guy didn't know. I said oh it's WC he said yeah. It wasn't his booth just a young guy working there. Was 3-4 people they had tables of herps. He could have been wrong or right. I've heard of wc and cb sold here from time to time.

Olives get to big for me and I live alone but was really cool to see one in person.

I was stoked until I read that you passed on the Olive Blaze :). They can get over 10ft but I'm sure you can handle one. My male is very food driven but still quite tame. He never bites or strikes at me. He tagged me once when I first got him but that was it. They're really fun snakes to keep and I hope you'll reconsider one if the opportunity presents itself again. We can be Olive brothers ;).

You're a terrible influence man between you and Danny in trouble. My biggest snake in current size is tie between my bp and boa. Most of mine are still growing. With a few more years of growth ahead of them. I'll live vicariously through you two.

I know what you mean Blaze. I'm in a similar position. I really want a scrub python after seeing Danny's beauties but I've decided to let my Olive, Coastal, and Bredli grow out a bit before getting another large snake.

Would look so much better with an olive in the photo :)

Seriously I know what you mean about seeing how the current charges go. I'm mulling a Suriname Bcc but given what adult enclosures everything will need I'm not entirely sure. It is a pretty snake though :)

LOL man you guys are terrible influences but I don't think I could handle an olive. See how an adult SD retic and carpet goes first. I'm pretty happy with my current stock. It was cool seeing one though.

I'm teasing :)

As you say pretty neat to see one. I've seen a pair just come up I think from the same shipment as mine.

Good price as well but two is enough!

This is most likely the "fake" aussie olive python. The papuan olive python. I believe they come from New Guinea.

If it is I'd have snapped it up right there. Papuans are awesome awesome snakes and almost impossible to come by in the UK.

Very difficult to tell from the photos one way or the other though.

You're right. I can't tell either from the pictures but it being WC is where I'm making my assumption it's Papuan.

Also I see the label of the vendor on the bin under it. I'm very familiar with them and I don't see him being involved in any smuggling out of Australia.

Fair. Either that or the person was wrong about it being WC. Either way TB missed an opportunity ;)

I'm reading some on the net about Papuan olives... though i doubt that source is true, it states the the snake can change color based on it's mood or body temperature? That's pretty cool.

@ TRD- That's an interesting fact about the color changes in the Papuan Olives. My Australian Olive changes colors too. I've often wondered what causes it. At times he looks light or dark brown, green, and sometimes even grayish.
@ Danny- Have you noticed any color changes in your pair?

I haven't yet. The male is a noticeably different colour to the female but I've not observed any the individual snakes changing in appearance. Of course Boa constrictors are well known for it.

Those who own them also say that papuans are the most intelligent snake they're worked with being seemingly very cognitively aware. I'd have one!
