View Full Version : Hello (carpet snake question)

Hello! I am new to keeping snakes and I have two 4 month old carpet pythons that I've had since they were two weeks old, and I am currently feeding them a fuzzy every week. One of them has stopped eating for nearly three weeks and seems disinterested in the food, any suggestions on why he's not eating and how to get him to eat?

Are you feeding them live or frozen/thawed?

Always start by double checking your husbandry. What are your temps like? Also, how are you offering the prey at feeding time?

Check on how you're feeding them (in or out of the cage, frozen or thawed), and your cage temperatures. Have they recently shed? Do you keep them both in the same cage?

We feed them thawed/ frozen fuzzy mice. The temp in there home sits about 32c to 35c. He shed about 3-4 weeks ago. We fed him just after he shed. They are brothers and yes we keep them together. We take them out of there home and put them in a feeding box every time we feed them and we use the bid long tongs to feed them. They are usually really good feeders but little man is just not interested in food. When we feed them we always make sure they are nice and warm(like skin temp) and hold the mouse just above his nose. Some times the other one wants us to move the mouse a bit but this one always just strikes as soon as you put him near his nose. Would it help if we gave him something else?

It may make some people feel queezy but maybe you should try braining. It's a trick I've used for awhile now and has even worked on field collected snakes. Take a scalpel or sharp pair of scissors and snip open the top of the skull and squish it around a bit.

Co-habitating them could cause one or both animals stress. Male carpets will combat each other as they mature and one could potentially kill the other. I'd consider housing them separately.

Pythons are very sensitive to the temp of the prey. You might want to warm the thawed mice up a little more to get a better feeding response.
