tank not a good size?

alright ladies and gents, my awesome manager was generous enough to gift me with a FREE tank cuz i work hard for him and he has no use for it anymore. he was a alligator/fish keeper and i believe this tank housed a baby gator but i am wondering if this tank will be good for my female bumblebee BP.

the dimensions are 4'L x 18"H x 13"W would this be sustainable for my full grown adult BP of course when she's an adult. i have her in a 20G now and he's not too sure on the G for his tank but that's the dimensions. i'm worried about the width only being 13" it looks kinda narrow like i'd have trouble getting a hide in i feel like. what's your guys opinion? is this strictly an aquatic tank? if i can't use it what would some of you use it for? she's 6 months old and 250Gs when do you move up to the next tank?

If you feel it's narrow, I'd probably get a bigger one. Some people don't mind keeping their snakes in cramped enclosures, but I like to give them room so my advice will reflect that. I like a width and height of 2' minimum for most adult snakes, including bps.

I move them up once they outgrow their current enclosure and can comfortably fit in the next enclosure I have in mind with minimum cover. So like 3-5 hides and a fake plant or two. A baby can be fine in a larger tank, I just don't like having to offer that much cover to make it work.

Yeah I think it's a touch narrow for an adult royal. Not by much but too narrow is too narrow. Could make a killer garter set up though complete with an area for fish etc :)

Devil's advocate here. Chances are slim that your ball python will hit 5 feet, so that's really ample room amd not cramped at all because he'll be able to stretch out nicely...but if you want to go bigger then go for it.

thanks guys for all your input, id love to use this tank since it was gifted and has a nice stand as well. @andy my only concern is the width being 13 inches across. i know the length and depth is plenty for an adult BP. but my concern is the width

I would say it is too small for an adult ball python. Your cage is 624 sq inch a 3x2 cage which is pretty standard for a ball python is 864 sq inch. My male BP is in a 4x2 pvc as he uses the space.

Look up videos on how to convert tanks. Those dimensions wouldn't be half bad if you laid the tank on the side. Plus its free so if you screw it up you aren't really out much.

hmph never thought of converting it cool idea. i dont know what else i can house in this tank i do feel like 13" is too narrow for a full grown BP. thanks for the knowledge!

I wouldn't stick with 13" for something that thick. A 20g is already 12-13". Flipping tanks around works perfectly fine. I am turning some on end for geckos. Sadly I can't get much for pics because my computer decided my camera is my phone and my phone is just error but I did a test a 10 with a plexiglass bottom section for bioactive and wood door with sandwiched screen door mesh then hinged to a frame siliconed around the top half of the open tank front. Some have even put in sliding doors on a lengthwise sideways tank but you may have to watch ventilation or even do more modification. If you don't mind the work you can remove the frame and pull a panel either to open up top ventilation for screen or use it to extend the aquarium base. I have a 90gallon with a cracked panel I plan to turn into 2' wide with a sealed wood extension on the back. Unfortunately 6'+ long tanks are too worthwhile to fix for me to score one bigger and do that. I am working on some enamel coated plywood bases I have and building up for big bull and pine snakes.

What I would do with this tank is go and buy a glass/acrylic aquarium lid for it, the kind that fits on the inside lip. Remove half of it and cut that piece longways so that it creates a lip on the bottom of about 3-4 inches. Silicone that in. Figure out a way to secure the lid in place and then boom. 48x18x13 terrarium fit for anything that doesn't need UV with very small modifications.

More work than you actually need since many hardware stores will cut plexiglass free and it's a heck of a lot cheaper. Just get the right size piece and stick it on if you want a certain size of glass. No cutting glass or buying expensive lids. If you hop on some aquarium groups you can also usually find someone that will custom cut aquarium lids and get thicker glass done cheap that way but local is better so you don't have to ship that long of glass. Facebook comes in handy for those things.
