Zamenis persicus

Well I said I wanted a small colubrid to finish the collection off with but it had to be something different. I've also wanted a black snake for long time.

Well my favourite local store has just taken in a Zamenis persicus - Persian rat snake - from a girl that couldn't get out to feed. Mainly because they had the set up completely wrong. Nervous little snakes these and won't eat in an open Viv.

Currently an iridescent rust but likely to darken right up. That said I'll be entirely happy if it stays it's current colour as he's a pretty little thing.

The store is holding onto him until he's then another 3 meals or so but once they had hun in a suitable enclosure he fed first time for them so I'm comfortable he'll be just fine.

No pictures as I didn't want to stress him too much but rest assured they will follow in due course...

I'm looking forward to the pictures. I've never heard of these guys before, but from what I see on Google these are really cool looking critters. Good luck with him!

He's stunning! Need to be kept cool but with the reptiles being in the basement I don't need to worry about him overheating in the summer. Needs 3 months brumation in the winter also but again the basement is ideal for this.

Pied Persians were all the rage like 10 years ago. Really cool looking snakes.

I actually went to the snake shop today to pick this little guy up. Been on hold whilst they got him feeding as the previous owner had the care completely wrong.

Very pretty little thing - photo doesn't quite do him justice but he was pretty stressed so just wanted to get him in. Viv is work in progress so I'll post pics of that later.

The persicus was taken to the store by two girls who couldn't get it to feed (note the store did not sell it to the girls originally) however its likely they were trying to treat it as a corn or a rat snake and not like the more timid species it is.

The store got a few feeds in it and tonight I'm pleased to say it struck fed without hesitation so I've no doubt its precious reluctance to feed was down to how it was being kept.

Most snakes I own I've been pretty confident they'll eat without a fuss but I must say I'm mighty relieved this one did.

He's ace. I fully expect not to see him very often but maybe as I improve his viv he'll become more visible.

Very skittish guy this and keen not to unduly stress it but managed to get a photo that better shows its current colouration.

I'm expecting it to darken up over time...

What a great find, Danny! He's beautiful. And not at all surprised by the easy success of a first feed. He's in good hands. Congrats!
