Where do you get large branches?

I'm looking for some for a 4x2x2 ft. cage. Where did you get yours and how much did it cost? I keep seeing people with nice big perches, and I haven't been able to find anything like that. Also, how do you treat wood that's too big to fit in an oven?

Local forest. I'm in the process of moving house and have a car load presently from all vivs which I've dismantled!

As far as treating them, I think that's overrated. But then, I'm a big fan of bioactive enclosures.

I drive about an hour south to the Chesapeake bay and collect driftwood. I usually bake the smaller stuff. Otherwise, I am with Eminart.

But what if they have spiders burrowed inside them? Or ants? Or termites?

Chances are slim, and those things won't harm your snakes. You could always leave it in the garage for a few weeks and watch for signs of these bugs if it's a legitimate concern for you.

Then I guess ants, termites and spiders are the least of your worries. ;)

Set the stick out in direct sunlight when it gets a bit warmer, the temperature in the stick will get so hot most things will leave. If there is loose bark on it you can sort of peel it off if you are that worried about it. Leave it in the sun for a day or two and then you should be good to go.

Before picking a branch up, you can always look at it to see if there is clearly a lot of ants going back and forth.

You should also be targeting stuff that isn't laying flat on the ground, that's where the majority of bugs will be.

I prefer grapevine, but it's big bucks... My second choice is manzanita, it's everywhere out here... Good luck on your hunt... Check your lakes for drift wood... We have a lot of that now thanks to a good winter...

Yea, they really are... the local shop here is selling off small bunches of Salix b. pekinensis wood for 20 euro. I mean, the hell, you can just go basically into any park or forest and you'll find them easily.

Spotted my new neighbour had just done a load of pruning and had some lovely branches kicking around his back garden.

They're now kicking around my back garden! :)

Yea, they really are... the local shop here is selling off small bunches of Salix b. pekinensis wood for 20 euro. I mean, the hell, you can just go basically into any park or forest and you'll find them easily.

Have you ever seen the fines for taking wood/branches or lumber out of the forest/park in our little country though? :D Don't get caught!
