View Full Version : Do you talk to your animals?
People think I'm crazy for talking to my snakes... But what am I supposed to do? :unibrow: ignore them, and be rude when they ask me a question... Haha...

I talk to all my reptiles - I get a more rewarding conversation from them than my wife! ;)

Nothing I wouldn't say to her face :). She tolerates me and my dreadful sense of humour.
Been married 12 years in August and trust me-after what we've been through together we wouldn't be without each other - all jokes aside :D

We don't really talk to our snakes, it's more like shouting at them. Come out from behind the sofa, move over and give me some room will ye, if I'd have wanted the TV moved I'd have done it myself

I love talking to my snakes, and pretending they can hear me. I even have one that will look up at me as if she's listening. Sometimes I even ask for nuzzles and kisses and they respond with nuzzles and kisses.

buahahahah! I yell at my snakes for getting me in trouble all the time (get out of the fridge. Don't climb under the chair. Stop wrapping around the floor lamp. You cannot fit through the headboard)

Oh gosh yea all the time. XD I talk to my snake(s), my rat, our dogs, birds outside.
Sometimes I quietly talk to the frozen rat, "apologizing" to it.
I am hopeless, but HEY! I love them all and don't care that they usually can't/don't reply~

OOooh yeah I talk to them all the time. Tho I'm usually yelling at the cats to stop being a**holes, the kitten especially. Some times the rabbit too, but he usually runs away in gleeful joy when I catch him being bad. He does not care that he was bad or that I caught him haha.
The reptiles I usually tell them how cute they are, especially my cape house snake since he's soooo little and cute <3.
My horse is my therapist. I would not be sane without her.

How much does your therapist charge? My cat therapist, well, let's just say he's completely unprofessional and should have his license revoked.

I tell mine to eat their good damn rats when I dangle them in front of them instead of waiting 45 seconds to strike. Or tell them to shut up when they hiss.
And I tell the boys "tips" on hooking up so I get eggs.

I wish I have a parseltongue like the one in Harry Potter so I could literally have a conversation with snakes.
I talk to my animals I can't lie, and many times that works out better than talking to the wife, just saying" so if your crazy I guess most of us are :)

Just call me Dr. Do Little...
I tell them, "I'll clean your cage tomorrow!" Then, "it's late, I'll get to your cage tomorrow?" And then, "I promise, I'll clean your cage tomorrow!!"
But sometimes, tomorrow is farther off than it seems!
I'm just glad they're not monkeys and they can't throw their poop at me...though my Bull likes to smear his, Picasso-like, high on the glass!

I talk to everything. My fish and their tanks, my plants, I've even talked to my snake and I don't even have one yet. "Just gotta sell 3 more dressers and I can afford a nice cage for you." "Just need to draw a hundred art commissions and I'll be able to get you." "Just a while longer.."

I talk to my wife and she doesn't listen to me, so I may as well talk to the snakes:)

As I understand it, they pick up vibrations through their jawbones...there was a scuba communications system I was testing some time ago, that had a full-face mask for speaking, but there were no ear phones. Instead, it had a device that was placed at the temple and vibrated when someone else talked; that vibration was translated through the bones to the inner ear and you could hear voices just fine that way...rather ingenious!
Now, I know snakes don't have the capacity to understand, but if they could, they wouldn't need ears...just the underlying, internal structures--hammer, anvil, stirrup, and semi-circular canals--or some other structures, which I know they don't have, to process the vibrations. Makes one wonder what could've been... :)

Silly me...
"...Snakes lack an external ear, but they do have an internal ear, and they are capable of detecting low frequency sounds ranging from 100 to 700 hertz. (A young person with normal hearing can hear frequencies between approximately 20 and 20,000 hertz.) A snake’s inner ear also allows it to detect motion, static position and sound waves traveling through the ground."
Hmmm...100-700hZ...and the human voice is 300-3400hZ...maybe they can hear me, but like my exes, they just don't listen!
My mistake on the inner ear....though I haven't looked up their hearing structure yet.

If I had a snake, I'd say "hey snakey, get off the couch, or from behind the fridge, and go make me some pie!". It's the least he can do for all the free mouse fritters he gets.

I think most everyone talks to their pets, no matter what they are and whether they can hear or not.

No external auditory canals; however, they do pick up vibrations transmitted from their jaw bones.

There's also this article (https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/how-snakes-hear-without-ears/2011/12/29/gIQAuseoWP_story.html?utm_term=.a02360db5a68)...

Okay, well instead of giving articles from the Washington post (which knows nothing about reptiles), I will give you info from a qualified veterinarian. Full article: The Vet Report: Contrary To Popular Belief, Snakes Can Hear (http://www.reptilesmagazine.com/The-Vet-Report-Contrary-To-Popular-Belief-Snakes-Can-Hear/)
"All reptiles have the ability to hear, albeit, to different degrees. Snakes, as a group, have the least developed sense of hearing, but they can hear. In addition, snakes have excellent vision, as well, and infrared heat sensing pits in their upper and lower lips." (Mader)
"Snakes lack external ears (pinna), ear canals (external auditory meatus) or external ear drums (tympanic membrane) as is seen in most other reptiles, but they have well-developed internal ears and can hear sounds from 40 to 2,000 hertz; the human voice averages 500 to 1,000 hertz, and thus, is within the range of hearing of a snake." (Mader)
I rest my case. I'm not blaming you though, lots of people think snakes can't hear, and can only "hear" vibrations. But, as Douglas Mader said, snakes have the ability to hear the human voice just fine.

Range of Frequencies for the Normal Speaking Human Voice
Males: 70-200 Hz
Females: 140-400
(men have more dense and longer vocal folds)
Singing voices (especially the higher harmonics) extend the range into the kilohertz region.
So unless you're singing to your snake, it won't register the higher frequencies.
And unless you can teach your snake to fetch, sit, play dead (the Hognose is an exception), it's really moot whether or not they can hear...they're still an animal with rudimentary cognitive capabilities beyond fight or flight, eat, sleep, defecate, and have sex once in a while...kind of like humans.

Still well within the range of snakes hearing. But your right, it's not like they can comprehend anything your telling them, I just thought some people would like to know.

I never paid attention until my wife was helping me with my evening duties and I felt a little self conscious when I realized I was. She does too so it was a fleeting feeling but I guess I just didn't realize I did it. But I talk to myself when alone sometimes so it was just natural. My wife would probably say I am always talking to myself, it's just sometimes people are around to participate in the conversation. Probably not wrong.

I talk to my corn snake all the time...every time I’m in the room she gives me this look like: “What’s going on? Are you going to let me out? Is there a mouse in my future?” So I say “Hi”, tell her what’s up etc. It just seems like the natural thing to do. :)
