Hi all:

I just wanted to introduce myself. I was a snake keeper when I was a teenager (not a great experience:no:) but I'm anxious to get back into it and do it right this time!

I'm very looking forward to getting a corn snake to start with, but who knows where this will go from there. I've ordered a 4x2x1 T8 from animal plastics and a RHP from Pro-Products and already have a herpstat 2 ready to go. I know, total overkill for a corn snake, but like I said, I want to do this right! Thanks, and I look forward to gaining experience and becoming a contributing member of this community!

Hi! I am pretty new as well. Sounds like you've got an awesome set up for your soon to be snake! We got a California king snake and within 2 weeks had a Mexican black king snake :) It's really easy to get carried away with buying stuff for them! We went from a 10 gallon fish tank to a Exo-Terra cage in about 2 days haha. I am sure you'll do great!

Exactly! I was going to end up with a terrarium of this size eventually anyway. I have other hobbies and the rule is always the same, spend more now - or a hell of a lot more later.

I went to the snake store and they wer3e all looking at me like I had three heads when I told them the size of the terrarium I bought. Of course, all their snakes were in these little tubs. When I get mine home it will be like moving into a mansion.

A black king snake! very pretty. I was looking at that as well, but my heart is pretty set on a corn snake as my first. Maybe for my second snake...

Depending on the type of snake you bring home, a larger enclosure may stress them out. Make sure to include lots of hides and crawl spaces for them, in case they happen to be one of those species that doesn't thrive in large spaces (i.e. ball pythons).

No worries there. I'm going to bring home a 1-2 year old corn snake. And I'm gonna clutter up the terrarium real good! There'll several hides, empty cereal boxes, paper towel tubes, lots of stuff. She'll have plenty of places to hide and, when she feels comfortable, plenty of places to explore.

Congrats on getting back into snakes! I started with a corn snake about a year ago. Now I have 8 snakes! My two corns are my friendliest and most fun to handle. I think you will have a lot of fun with your new corn.

Welcome aboard JR. That's a lot of space for a corn snake. You could add a divider and put 2 critters in that T8. I'm just sayin. :)

And I appreciate you're sayin' ! I suspect that I'll want to get more snakes. If so, I'll get a divider. But if not, I guess the corn will have lots of room. Time will tell.

Literally within a few month's time my collection grew from just a kingsnake, to the cute Pacman frog I saw at the store when getting my snake, to having two other snakes, a frilled dragon, and a bearded dragon. That is too accurate XD

I wish I had the consent of my family to get so many snakes! I have the space, its the compromise with the wife that is the sticking point. My plan is to get one in the house and then see if I can sneek a few more in!:)

I feel your pain JR. My S/O gave me a tough time in the beginning too. Bribery worked well for me :). You have to soften them up a little first before springing the new critter news on them. Date nights, flowers, foot rubs, a little extra help around the house. Those things go a long way. You have to be subtle about it though because it can't look like a bribe. It has to appear that you're just being super nice. And then when she's nice and comfy in her happy place that's when you poor on the charm and break out the puppy dog eyes and gently ask, "Honey, can I get a new snake?" It's tough for them to say no when the honey do list is done and you've gone a little above and beyond. It can get progressively more expensive though. I've had to take a trip to the beach and buy a plane ticket to NY for her to visit a friend just to get my last two new snakes. All well that ends well though. Good luck bud! :)

Lol. Bribery is how I got my snake, waiting about a year before I speak of getting another. (So it is less obvious)

I actually WISH my fiancé wasn't into reptiles, then I would have some form of self control (maybe). We enable each other lol.. but it is nice to have a hand with maintenance and be able to share the excitement with one another
