View Full Version : What is on your wishlist?
Hello all,
Just out of curiosity, what are those snakes that are on your wishlist, or in your dreams, but you don't have in your collection? I'm just curious here if there are people around struggling the same as me with attaining those special/rare/difficult to find species?
Personally I'm dying to get my hands on a pair of Boiga cyanea. I just love the look of those, but my girlfriend is not allowing for any venomous snake around, even if they really pose no harm for humans (even hognose is out of the question) ... I'm still trying to convince her. The other would be Gonyosoma oxycephalum... beautiful snake, but they are big and bad tempered so I've heard. I don't mind snakes with an attitude, but I heard these guys can be pretty insane and like to bite you in your face instead of hand. And last but definitely not least and more common snake, but so far I have not found a breeder here that has them, Lampropeltis alterna Black Gap. Nice looks, but, here in Hungary very rare, as in not seen in over 5 years.
I found a breeder of G. oxycephalum just yesterday, but his snakes are currently in the local zoo. He told me to shoot an e-mail in late summer when he has them back.
So, what are your sought after reptiles?

I'm new to the snake scene and have yet to purchase my first. I'm planning on Antaresia childreni as my first. A. perthensis and Eunectes notaeus are my future wish list snakes.
As for lizards... don't get me started :D

Personally.....up high on my list are timor pythons, red or orange eastern hognose, blue phase baron's racer, mangshan vipers, indo-chinese spitting cobras, and a trans pecos or broad banded copperhead. For lizards, I'd really like more gargoyle geckos, and some type of dwarf monitor.

Columbian rainbow boa, Brazilian rainbow boa, white lipped Python, black headed Python, argentine boa, dumerils boa, ummmmm.....
I think my husband wants to get into the hots, but I don't think his wishlist will ever be fulfilled....

I would love to get a new pair of carpets. I really like the axanthic granite jags. So I want to get a granite het axanthic and an axanthic het granite, one of which being jag. I think this would be a pretty cool pairing because all of the babies would be, at a minimum, double het. It would mostly produce visuals which I think would be pretty cool. Can't imagine looking in the egg box one day and seeing all of those wonderful snakes!

Pahahahah, good one! xD
Boy there is probably 15 snakes I would like to own, but I meet this guy who had a Albino western diamondback rattlesnake... He was so cool in his cage rattling his little rattles... I've wanted one ever since... I doubt my wife will ever let me have one, I'll have to wait until she goes on... And then I'll get one and a blond... :freakedout:

Oooh boy, this is hard.
Near-ish future (my land lord currently has my critter-count capped, and breeding here is entirely off the table, so I'd need a new space):
*Boaedon capensis breeding pair or trio, they're such adorable little snakes
*Really into corn snakes now after seeing more in person recently, totally in love with striped ones.
*Male Bci, I really love hypo leopards particularly but a sunglow is also really striking
*Female pinstripe BP, maybe an axanthic?
*Cal Kings, especially with a nice even white/black banding, mostly because king snakes as a symbolic thing are really fascinating to me (there's a line in Red Dragon comparing Will Graham to one which really stands out to me)
*Leucistic Texas Rat Snake. My uncle had one years ago and it was a gorgeous, gorgeous animal.
*Pueblan Milk Snake. These I think the basic, wild pattern is the most beautiful.
Further future (would want much more experience/funds available):
*Granite burmese python. Some of the retic morphs are really stunning, but with what I've heard and seen of their temperment I think a burm would really be great, and the granite pattern is really nice looking. If I ever stepped into giants, odds are it'd be here.
*BRB. Maybe doesn't deserve to be in the same ranking, but I'm not comfortable with the potential dehydration issue just yet, particularly since I take some long weekend trips. An automated misting system and/or babysitter for the weekend would go a long way.
*Sumatran Short Tailed Python. That solid black coloring, man. God damn.
*Probably never gunna happen, but hey it's a dream so why not mention it: Albino monocled cobra. Beautiful animals, but I have no experience with hots. Maybe someday, it's something I'd like to learn more about, but the day I get one is far, far in the future.
I'm not looking for anything particularly rare. Just specific colors that are mostly locality based rather than captive morph and mostly North American species. Then there's just the random stuff I come across that's interesting but I don't really have room in my plans so far to bother doing much research into. Maybe eventually something more exotic.

For joke I wanted to reply with an add for Candi, I was sure to find a few on the internets. Apparently there's a male stripper going by Candi...
On the good sides of things, I showed a bunch of pictures of B. cyanea juvies, and got a green light (hard to resist them, so cute, though I had to collect the nice pictures and not gaping defensive little aholes)! Now just need to find CBB somehow. I guess I will show baby snakes from now on to convince her that it's alright, even though it turns in a 9 ft monster within 3 years time :D
@Skipper; Eunectes notaeus I thought about too, but I wouldn't know how to house a full grown one properly. We already have a collection of 21 animals now, and 2 kids on top, running out of space.. ;(
@RedTailRutiodon; I also have a weak spot of a nicely banded Cali king for some reason, though I haven't had one of them ever... It's still somewhere floating around my brain from time to time. They have this very iconic thing about them, like diamondbacks, ETBs, or gaboons.

Now I'm curious about the ad!
My husband uses this strategy often. It's how he convinced me into having 2 retics. They were babies. And then his son found a YouTube video of a 24 foot retic in a zoo somewhere, AFTER we bought the retics. AFTER. Would've been helpful BEFORE.

There's several snakes on my wish list. The first being an Amazon Tree Boa. I saw one at a pet shop and wanted one ever since. Just absolutely love the coloring on them. Another would be a Reticulated Python, but in Ohio I have to have a permit to own one.
Reticulated, burmese, and rock pythons are considered under the dangerous animal laws in this city.

To be perfectly honest I am pretty happy where my collection is currently. It is a strange feeling. The next few things on my list I will be able to produce myself hopefully. Some time down the line I hope to get my hands on a pair of Boelen's pythons. Right now I am pretty short on space and money.
... The other would be Gonyosoma oxycephalum... beautiful snake, but they are big and bad tempered so I've heard. I don't mind snakes with an attitude, but I heard these guys can be pretty insane and like to bite you in your face instead of hand.
I don’t know where you heard this, but it is exaggerated. Arboreal snakes in general tend to be more prone to bite then terrestrial snakes, but they are not just waiting to bite you. My Gonyosoma oxycephalum are active and curious, so they usually come to have a look as soon as you open the door of the enclosure. They watch you doing maintenance and sometimes they decide to go for a walk outside. In my experience they are sometimes a little unpredictable and might bite you without any apparent reason in a situation they did never bite before. But this is just that, a harmless bite, a little blood and that’s all. Just make sure to get cb animals, wc are 90% death candidates.

Thanks. TBH I only heard from hearsay and read on forums/websites. I have no previous experience with this species but they fascinate me. But I have to take into account other inhabitants in this house who do not like any animal with any aggressive tendencies... I personally don't care and in my experience when you confidently grab any smaller animal that is afraid, it may bite you the first 1-2 times, but if you don't let go and stay calm, this behavior is easily mitigated. Of course with bigger things you need to take care, grabbing a large defensive constrictor or tailing a beauty snake, even if confident, might not be your best day :D

I would love a False Water Cobra, but do not have the space/finances to keep another reptile yet. That's just fine, because I can research the heck out of them before I get one. IMHO that's the best way to get a new snake.

With my upcoming addition I'm pretty happy with my well rounded collection. Sure I see stuff that is nice but in terms of "oh I have to have/really really want that" that has passed for now. Now I'm more focused on as elaborate enriching enclosures for my snakes. For now it's good to be happily content.

WISH list:
Crotalus horridus (timber rattler)
Happening Soon List:
Spilotes pullatus (tiger rat snake) pair
Back Up Happening Soon List if I end up broke this summer:
Coluber constrictor (black racer) juvie pair
I used to have a list a mile long of snakes I wanted. But, the longer I do this, the more I pare it down to just a few snakes that I'm really interested in keeping. I love all snakes, but no longer feel the need to have one of everything - just one of several things. ;)

My wish list....ooh this is fun because we have a reptile expo in town in a couple weeks! I want a thayeri, leonis, or gray banded king, okeetee corn snake (already have an amel and a tessera), African house snake, ball python (I don't have one yet!), western hognose and a sand boa.
I would love to set up some display snakes...I was lucky enough to get a CBB rough green snake who lives in a bioactive viv. So much fun to have a naturalist set up but they do take up more space. So I will have to add on to my wish list: a bigger house with a dedicated snake room and lots of space! Then I can have some nice good sized setups.

Welllllllllll, if I had more room, I think I'd like another sand boa. Such chill little snakes. And maybe a hognose again (from a better breeder :( ). And a female cape house snake to go with my male. I'm sure I'm forgetting others. OH! A rubber boa.

An old thread, but at the time I was perfectly content with my one snake. But this site does things to you. I'm still pretty content, but since spring started and I've been out searching for snakes, I've become obsessed with speckled kingsnakes. So much so that it is now on my wishlist, with one caveat. I have required myself to see one in the wild before I can get one. So it may yet be a while since I've been out looking nearly every day and still haven't seen one.

Interesting, I'm on the lookout for a L.g. splendida which is pretty close to the floridana. This Sunday there's a reptile exhibition, hope I can find one :) Lovely animals, I very much like the getula species.

I'm indecisive so I'm gonna post a top three for each category.
Snake:
3. Just one of those Okeetee Corn Snakes or Everglade's Rat Snakes that when someone shows parents in the ad they put not for sale on. It may seem simple but to have one of the best of the absolute best version of a specific species of even a basic/commonly kept snake can honestly be more exciting than the weirdest morph/mutation.
2. Rubber Boa, kind of a weird snake you don't really see available anymore and when they are, quite frankly it's usually some random who just happens to have them. For those that don't know they are the northern relative of rosy boas and have some interesting care requirements. Don't know why I think they are cool, they are kind of ugly actually.
1. Emerald Tree Boa, for all of the reasons I think everyone would want them. Just not ready to take the leap yet.
Lizards:
3. Panther Chameleon, honestly really nothing stopping me from getting one of these other than room. I just think they are so freakin sweet looking. There are rarer or more interesting species of Chameleon but, eh, its just a flavor thing. I've got a special place in my heart for the little mini leaf chameleons though and it would be fun to get a breeding population together.
2. Fire Skinks, these used to be freaking everywhere in the market but as imports. Its a real shame that no one has ever bothered to figure out their captive breeding because I think if someone could figure that out they could set the market on them to kind of chase the tails of the BTS craze. I know they aren't as big or personable as a blue tongue skink but they have sharp colors and smaller housing requirements.
1. Water Monitor, the insanely tame water monitors over at NERD that are priced more like purebred dogs than anything. But also act like dogs in terms of handling. One of the most interesting things going on in the lizard community right now simply because that guy is blowing the walls of what people could expect out of a lizard.
Turtles:
2. Russian Tortoise, if you recognize a theme its that I like underappreciated species and none meets that definition in my list like the Russian Tortoise the resident "I'm dying at this Petsmart" of the group. Just like seeing them be taken care of properly and I think it'd be cool to have.
1. Eastern Box Turtle, basically illegal for me but I had one as a kid before then and it was awesome (unfortunately I was like 5 so care fell to my mom and she ended up rehoming it.)
Amphibians:
3. Spring Peepers, I kept these wild caught as a kid for years. I'd spend hours finding bugs for them to eat and then convincing my mom to go get crickets for them when it was winter. One of sort of kept animals I'm not too proud of (though they were healthy I understand why taking animals from the wild is bad now). I'm kind of surprised that these aren't kept more, they are hardier than any dart frog and have loads of personality.
2. Tiger Salamander/Fire Salamander, honestly just think these seem awesome. My house doesn't have a basement and the power goes out a bit too often for me to be comfortable keeping amphibians which is kind of depressing considering amphibians are where I cut my teeth as a young hobbyist. Never really had any salamander/newts outside of a firebelly newt so its always something I've wanted to try.
1. Colorado River Toad, cause BOOM that's a big ole toad.

I'm pretty much done snake wise now. Sure there's a dozen or so I'd like to pad out the collection but none really that are bucket list except a true proven locality Boa constrictor and a Dominican mountain boa. I don't have room for the boa I don't think - couldn't do it justice but if a Dominican came along I'd be able to squeeze it in.
There's a few lizards I can think of but I don't really have time for more than one. That said I might get Julius a girlfriend...

Going to revise my wish list, lol. Currently I'm looking at getting a Water Snake or Kenyan Sand Boa breeding pair. I don't know why, but I'm really interested in semi-aquatic snakes. I've even looked at getting Tentacled Snakes. The little sand noodle I have has made me decide to attempt to breed them. I love all snakes, but I enjoy keeping some more than others.

Honestly the ones I would most certainly want if I had the room/money would be a Kingsnake, a Carpet Python and/or a Brazilian Rainbow Boa, and a Dumeril's Boa!

And my Parents were ok with more than two. X'D
Though right now, I love my two scaley housemates~ !

The better question to ask is what's not on my wish list. I have quite a few species that I've been wanting as of lately, and what I plan to get when I move is a short tail and a female Baird's at least. I'm thinking about getting a leopard boa in addition to this, but that's not a guarantee. There's also a few lizards I'm interested in, but I don't know if I want to deal with the feeder colonies again. Those were painful.

Carpet python. Probably jungle carpet python. I love the black yellow contrast. I've had a normal ball python for 23 years, and just recently gotten a baby bumblebee ball python. I love them both, but...I'm ready for a challenge and something bigger and more exciting in my snake keeping. So... JCP it is. :) Hopefully making that dream a reality in a month or two.
Since all of my snakes right now are fairly small and nocturnal I'd really like to get something a bit more active and display worthy at some point. My list is constantly changing but at the moment the animal topping it is a high white drymarchon melanurus rubidus.
Would really love an Indigo myself, but no chance here...

Amazon Tree Boa, which may or may not happen soon.

Brazilian Rainbow Boa, they are just absolutely beautiful. I'd need a good cage and some more experience before I made the leap though.
