View Full Version : Carrot, Paradox Albino Cape House snake.
I forgot to share this little one on this forum. It hatched on the 15th of this month.
Here is the original post about her.
Had this little one hatch out 3 days ago and it had some issues, an enlarged eye and a half absorbed yolk, that I was thinking it would either die from or I'd have to euthanize it.
Surprisingly, after 3 days of care it now looks like it might have a chance. The eye has shrunk to a normal size, though I believe it might be blind in that eye and the belly button is misshapen but closing. Have to see if it will eat and if it can pass food but feel better about sharing pictures of this Paradox Albino Cape House snake now.

Post first shed update on little Carrot from today.
Someone said that it looked like a moldy carrot and I can't disagree, so Carrot it is!
Bum eye looked bad during shed but is looking much better now. She is losing it but it seems like it is going to heal well.
Refused first feeding attempt but despite that, I've got a better feeling about her chances now. (Only 60% sure on gender, haven't popped her yet.) Tail shape looks male but can't see 'penes by candling ...

Gorgeous baby! Too bad about the eye, but it shouldn't affect it too much. Are infected/lost eyes common in albino house snakes?

No, it's not common to my knowledge. The eye was malformed when it hatched, so it was most likely an incubation error.

I was just curious, it's fairly common in boas so I was curious if it was elsewhere, too. The infections happen while still forming inside mom with boas, too.
Again, very cool snake! Don't think I've seen a paradox albino house snake before. I assume this one will be a keeper?

Really hoping this one pulls through for you so we can be flooded with many more pics of its progress!

I've never heard of a Paradox House snake before either. Haven't decided if it will be a keeper or not but it's a very strong possibility.

What a little cutie!
That's am Awesome snake and a funny/fitting name. I also have never seen or heard of a paradox albino house snake. Maybe it's a first??? Hope it makes it and begins to eat for you. I look forward to more updates on this one. Best of luck!
Normally I wait longer before resorting to force feeding, but since this one only got half it's yolk and doesn't have as much reserves, I went ahead and force fed a mouse tail tonight. Got it 3 quarters down and she finished swallowing it on her own, yay! That's a small, positive step in the direction of one eating entirely on it's own at least.

Woot! Congrats on the little step in the right direction! =D

Well that's good it somewhat ate on its own with a little assistance. Hope it keeps it down and move onto non assist feeding soon.
Adorable! Hope the little one makes it. I love house snakes.

Wow! Congrats on the hatchling. Isn't it amazing how the really unique productions can be sidelined with developmental/genetic issues. Well, i'm sure with the breeding we do that it comes with the territory. Amazing reptile you produced there. I'm sure he's in very good hands that will give him a great chance to thrive. Yeah, strikes me as a definite holdback. Good luck.
Took some new pictures of Carrot last night. Still not eating on her own but otherwise is doing well.

Still looking good! Hopefully it starts eating on its own soon.
The eye looks interesting, it almost looks like it didn't completely lose the eye. It's still got a pupil and iris and everything. Just puny and underdeveloped, so I'm sure it can't see out of it, but different than what you normally see in the eyeless/one-eyed albino boas as they lose the entire eyeball.
Yeah, the eye is super weird. At first I thought that she'd lose the whole thing, that happened to a garter snake I had after she got an infection in her eye and the whole eye eventually dried up and fell out. Carrot's eye looked a lot like that at first but when she shed, it was like only the top couple "layers" for lack of a a better word, came off with the shed. There is still the remnants of a pupil there, though you can tell it's not functional and I'm 99.9% sure she can't see anything out of it.
Awesome! Carrot today with a full belly. She finally ate on her own!
My live rodent supplier had a litter of very small newborns this time and one of the other non eating House snakes also ate last night. Leaves me just one non eater.

Its always nice to see your snakes finally eat. I was always told, don't worry, no animal will starve itself to death, but when its your animal then it's human nature to worry.
Carrot has now eaten twice on her own and has already put on a good bit of weight from it.
Took this video today, it's not very good unfortunately. She was very unhappy about the phone for the first part of it and did not want to cooperate with posing!

lol So awkward. I have a cat that does that. Not exactly in the same way because his skeleton doesn't work like that, but the general idea.
Carrot really is a little miracle baby!
She shed tonight and her damaged eye looks a thousand times better than it had. Surprisingly, though it is undersized (part of it come off with her first shed) it now looks healed and the pupil is reactive.
So I now think that she has at least some vision out of it!!

i wonder if it's just a issue with the eye cap? if so, maybe it will self correct a little with each shed? really cool looking snake! i enjoyed seeing her get better, fingers crossed for more updates!
She shed today, so I snapped some shiny new pictures. Finally gave up pretending that she might not stick around and made it official by moving her records in with all the rest of the perma residents here.

So is this a morph that hasn't been seen before? I'd call it the Zombie House Snake. It looks like it's dead to be honest, I say that in a good way. REALLY cool snake. Will be cool to see if it proves out. But I'll be honest in saying I don't know tons about genetics.
She's a T- Albino, which is the most common morph in the US. However she is either a Paradox, which is caused by some type of error/damage in the copy of the genetic code in sections of the color producing parts of the skin/scales. She's an Amelanistic, so should be incapable of producing black pigment, yet there it, thus it's a paradox. (As I understand how most paradox works) it's generally a nearly random genetic fluke and in everything but Sand Boas, is not predictably inheritable, though paradox animals are slightly more likely to produce another paradox than a non paradox animal.
Or she could be a chimera, which is when two zygote twins, in this case fraternal, merge into one being early in development and the animal or human ends up having different sections of DNA throughout it's body. That happens sometimes in lots of species but is also a random chance. I know of several obvious Chimera corn snakes but I've never heard of either a Paradox or Chimera House snake before. I'm not sure if there is a way to prove she's one or the other without actually looking at her genes though. Nor does it much matter, I guess.

Well what if House snakes paradox are like sand boa paradox's?
If I were you I'd try and prove it out just to be sure. Worst case scenario you make a bunch more super cute babies.
