View Full Version : Found a little snake???

Maybe you guys can help me identify this little guy... I found him tonight when I was walking my dog... I don't know weather or not to keep him... I wouldn't even know what to feed him... I had one of these come in under my door a year ago and I gave him to my grand kids... I don't think they could get him to eat anything, so they let him go... Maybe I should let him go I don't know what to do here... Help....

Common Sharp-tailed Snake (Contia tenuis). It's an adult, they average around 10 inches long or so. They feed on slugs and the like. Best to let it go, fossorial species like these are not the easiest snakes to keep.

Thanks!... Ya I think your right... There is a nice wet land 100 yards from me where I'm pretty sure he came from... I'll haul him back over tomorrow... I think there is plenty to eat over there... Thanks for your help...

Ya I thought so too! I put him out in this little wet land we have next to us... I think that's his best chance at a good life...

It is annoying to feed such snakes. Especially wild. They are used to hunting all sorts of snails, slugs, worms, and small insects. Not usually typical insects or worms sold for pets and bait either. They turn down mealworms and waxworms. The nightcrawlers are too big and the smaller worms I'm told are bitter and depending what they've been eating may not be safe. You need baby nightcrawlers or earthworms. My dekayi also likes isopods (pillbugs/rollie pollies) but it's getting cold out and my culture indoors is not doing so great.
