View Full Version : A few brown spots on scales on her bottom side?

What could this mean? There are a few brown spots on her spaces on the bottom side? Could it be scale rot? It doesn't look like she is about to shed. She is super shy and reserved, I can't really get her to open up much. In general she has dry skin, so I have been misting more.
I think you need a minimum of 5 posts before you can post pictures. That will be your best bet.
Or just create links to an imgr or bitbucket link.

Hi, what type of enclosure is the reptile in and what are you using as the substrate? Next ,we will need the temps both ambient , warm side, cool side, humidity. Also how are you heating the enclosure?

20 L zilla snake tank, repribark, temperatures stay at 80 on cool side and 90 on hot side, humidity at 65-70 and I use a heating lamp over the top of the cage so she couldn't touch it at all

Help! What's wrong with my ball python's scales?
20L zilla snake tank, (she is really small still), hot side:90 cool side: 80, humidity 65-70, I use a heating lamp above the cage so she can't touch it at all.

What is the wattage of the lamp? Is it regulated on a dimmer? At best, it looks like a ventral scale irritation. Are there any areas of excessive moisture on the reptibark? IMO, I would put her onto paper towels and monitor it more closely going forward.

Okay I will try paper towels for sure. It is on a dimmer and 12/12 light cycle, 75 watts on the light and no there isn't, she's never knocked over her bowl or anything

It's difficult to definitively tell with absolute certainty what this is. Actually it could be a type of ventral scale irritation, a thermal burn, but it's clearly something going on. You said you were heating the enclosure with a lamp that is on a dimmer so to me ,that kind of rules out the thermal burn. The most we can do is speculate on the diagnosis. Putting the reptile on paper towels and deep cleaning the enclosure is the first line of treatment. Considering a exotic vet if the condition doesn't improve is your best option.

What substrate is in the enclosure? How are you keeping the humidity up?

Misting, and reptibark

How wet is the substrate? It looks like it could be fungal and or discolouration of the reptibark. The pic isn't clear and i don't know how long you've been using this type of set up.
I would change to paper towels until the next shed cycle.

Merged your two threads into one.
Also, post a pic of your enclosure too please. From what I saw in the second thread picture looks to be simply discolouration from the substrate in what is commonly known as the "belly button".

This looks suspicious. The yellow could be a discharge from the tissues inbetween the ventral scales. Change the paper towels as soon as they look soiled bc they will mold over time once they're damp. Also if you can get a appointment with a exotic vet that would be your best course of action so any pathogens can be identified. In the meantime a small tub with room temperature water or a tad warmer than room temperature with either betadine (antiseptic ) or Chlorhexadine (antiseptic) mixed in to lightly color the water will help until you can get to the vet appointment. Place.the animal in the water for 20 min soak. Make sure the water is low enough to just cover the ventral scales and make sure the animal drinks clear water before placing him in the tub to avoid drinking the treated water.

Okay what else can I do for her?
And suspicious how? Scale rot suspicious? Or something worse >_< or hopefully not as bad ?

Just suspicious that something is there but "what" is the 1,000,000 dollar question. The other thing you can do for her is get a professional opinion in the exotic vet. Did you make an appointment? That will be the definitive answer to her condition. Just continue keeping the enclosure clean and dry. Consider raising the ambient temperature by a few degrees. I think you are doing all the proper things for her right now. Great job..

A few things:
1. You'll want to put down about 2 - 3 layers of paper towel. Once a snake goes, a thin layer will be soiled and gross very shortly.
2. How do you measure your humidity? You say it's 65 - 70 but with a screen lid and heat lamp it's difficult to keep humidity that high.
3. You can raise your temps a bit higher.
4. Whatever this is it looks like it's in the early stages so you caught it in time. A vet could help you. Right now, keep it dry and everything and hopefully it'll be cleaner once it sheds.
5. The reason she's probably shy is the hides are really large and there's a lot of open space. I would use really small tight fitting hides right now.
6. What do you feed her and how often?
