He, is a She! Asian Forest Scorpion

So I took a scorpion from a friend who was leaving for Basic Training. Was told it was a male, turns out it is a female and just so happened to start giving birth today.

Never breed anything except for feeder rats so I am at a loss here. What do I need to do?

Keep them at the same temps and things as the female is at, but a bit moister. I would separate them, but it's not necessary. Looking at the pic, looks like she may still have some more to go. Don't bother her too much! They are pretty prone to eating their young if disturbed too much. Feed the scorpling small prey items like pinhead crickets and/or prekilled prey items as they will scavenge. If you're going to separate them, they will come off of the female's back when they are 2nd instar.

So far that's what I have read Bob. I am picking up some Deli cups this weekend, and yesterday picked up a can of the freeze dried crickets, along with a few live. Crushed up the live and put it in with the freeze dried and she seems to be eating them.

Going to do a spray now before work to up the humidity a bit.

Wow, I heard a real ugly story about these, were this 6 year old girl got one of these... It grew into this 8 inch monster... It got out one day and was sitting on their stairs... This little girl who is now 10, accidentally steps on it and it bits her... Two weeks later their grafting her behind tissue on to her foot trying to save it.. The flesh was all gone down to the bone... You could get me to own one of these...

Just realized I never answered your question's...

It was sold to my buddy as a male, and started getting fat a few months ago. He got it from Petco, so I am sure it was co-habituated with a male at some point. But, the gestation period can be up to 14 months on these guys.

She is typical behavior from a Asian Forest in that she is incredibly defensive. However, we'll have to see if that changes after the babies are gone. Personally I have never held her, and may never.

Agreed, Heterometrus sp. just don't have the venom to do something like that. I would not hold her. Inverts are very unlike snakes and other reptiles in that, they can't be "tamed down". They will always see you as a threat that's trying to eat it.

That's my philosophy on pretty much all animals. Very few actually "enjoy" company from us.

Generally speaking, those who have never had a reptile, spider, gecko, etc... generally have the worst knowledge about them.

Had a ball python when the wife and I first got together. While I was at work, she was handling him and she fell asleep with him on her belly. Woke up a few hours later and she put him up. Stupid, but accidents happen and I keep my house pretty cold, so the snake just curled up on her to stay warm. Fast forward a few month when she is telling her Mom the story, and the Mother in Law to this day swears the snake was trying to size her up for a meal. A freaking B.P....

On the plus side she rarely comes over due to my reptiles.

Totally understand... the spider stories (I'm a spider guy for the most part) people tell are crazy and sometimes make me visibly cringe.
