i was just wondering how everyone came up with their favorite snake's name. was he named after his color? your favorite relative? a characteristic? macandchz (mac) was named for his color. he looks like a bowl of macaroni and cheese when he balls up!

I have a few favorites....

Cleopatra the purple sunfire retic was named by someone on anther forum. I call her Cleo for short.

Nunu my sunglow boa was named this because people kept referring to her as the new new snake since I had so many additions at the time.

Vera the black milk was named after Jaynes gun in Firefly.

Roy my albino chinese beauty was named after my favorite character in Fullmetal Alchemist.

Lucky my first boa was named that because I was 12 and damn lucky according to my mother to be getting something that was going to get so big.

I'm thinking some re-naming is going to be in order as my POS ex named most of mine.............but...my male lavender corn is affectionately called "Omnom" (I named him and my rubber boa) because that's what he does lol...my rubber boa is called "Mimizu" which is Japanese for earthworm, my snow stripe corn is "Kiyohime" which is a Japanese snake demon, my bloodred is "Kuraokami" which is a Japanese dragon, my western hognose is "Hogwort", and my ball python is "Nile" because they are an African species.

I personally am HORRIBLE at coming up with names...it took me a week to name my dog Lucy "Lucy" rather than calling her "little girl" lol. I'm having a hard time thinking of a name for my new little boa :O

My sister named her cat Nahla after the lion king with different spelling on purpose. I adopted her and have kept the Disney theme ever since.

Most of my snakes are named after gods, warriors, and cartoon characters. :)

Apollo after the sun god, because well he's orange red. Plus I know a big red horse also named Apollo.

I name mine based on their outstanding characteristics and what I think fits them at the time. It makes it a bit easier when I tell my wife about what one of them did etc.

Ghost because of her pink eyes and relation to Jon Snow in GOT. She's not white yet, but she'll be later.

My Saharan Sand Vipers are named Apep and Wadjet after Egyptian snake deities (with cute names). My false Water Cobras are Deedee and Joey after my favorite Ramones. My Gila Monster is named Feleena for Marty Robins.

My little boy usually has last say on pet names hence why we have a female cat called Ben (after Ben elf). He also named the snake after his favourite nursery teacher (Auntie Rachel) and our yet to be acquired dog is going to be called Marshall.

I'll have to be more firm when naming my new snakes as and when I get them...

so that's where auntie rachel comes from! i was wondering about that.

Most of my animal names comes from hours of just looking through different and unique baby names and finding ones I like. There is no theme or anything, though the snakes I do want to breed, most of them were paired (2 S names, 2 J names etc). Only a few of my snakes were named after their colors (Rory--he is reddish), personalities (Sparky--he was a bit of a pain in the a**), and my favorite season (Winter--first snake I owned).

Well my favorite reptile (sorry not a snake haha) is my peacock monitor, I never really named him though lol, my geckos are always named afyer movie characters

Sevvy
08-31-16, 12:21 AM
I've only got one, but I just named him and I've still got that "new name feeling". His name's Severus Snake-- Sev and Sevvy for short. I'm really into Undertale right now (a PC game with a lot of puns) and I love Harry Potter. I decided I'd name him that if he turned out to be male, and he did, so I'm super excited.

Tsubaki

@Sevvy.. I have a bone to pick with you.. Do you think Sans is so calm because nothing gets under his skin? Or because he doesn't have the heart to get worked up about anything? Sorry about these skele-puns, i find them pretty humerus. But for anyone not familiar with [P]Undertale, i might seem like a bit of a bonehead. :D ... I feel like i need snake siblings to name Sans and Papyrus now... And another female to name Undyne... haha!

Anyway!! I never used to name my reptiles besides a few special ones (Granted my last collection was a lot larger than this one, i would have lost track) But now i do, it's fun and it helps my friends and family to understand which snake i am talking about. Now that i only have a 'few' and i really get to spend more time with each one and get to know them better... They all have names :) Also sparked some interest with my friends and family and if one not well (Like Loki was for a while) they actually ask me how he's doing.. Which is nice as i am not as involved with the local reptile community any more, but i do like to talk about my animals haha. I give my animals names that i like, or that seem fitting..

My Boas are al named after characters in a show called 'Bleach' All 5 letter names. (Was a coincidence)
Renji (A hot headed redhead with black tattoos, seemed fitting for my hot headed superhypo)
Rukia (A slightly hot headed character that uses a snow katana, sort of fits my slightly hotheaded t+ albino)
Aizen (Evil incarnated, both of them :D)

My giants have random names, all 4 letters for some reason. Which also was a coincidence at start with the first 2, but then it sort of became a theme.
Zuko (From Avatar, because he's my handsome prince and acts like one too)
Xena (From Xena warrior princess, because she acts like her, all she needs is a leather skirt and a blonde sidekick)
Hiro (From Heroes, because he just reminds me of the short of stature do-good character Hiro a bit and i love the name)
Kira ~(From Deathnote, it was his late brothers name.. Fits both of them because they're smart i suppose, but i mainly just love the name. Have had several pets with this name)
Then my last one, my burmese python.
Loki (From the avengers series, because basically in this collection he is a loner and because i love the name+character)

@Tsubaki: I love Bleach!!

I need to think of a name for my new little guy but I am so horrible with that...it's so hard! Even naming my video game characters is an epic feat lol...

JellyBean
10-06-16, 09:24 AM
I like to hear the stories behind the names too :D

Bean's full name is
"Jelly-Bean a/k/a David Hisselhoff"...

The jellybeans are for the shapes on his back.
He HAD to be a David, because I'm the only one that's NOT a David!
(Hubby, son, father-in-law, several close friends...)
And HISSelhoff is a name play on 'David Hasselhoff', and it was just too funny to pass up :bouncy:

We also have a Chiweenie named "Oscar Meyer" (like the hot dogs)
Had...
A Bearded Dragon named "Spyro" after the the video game, Spyro the dragon.
A green Iguana named "Bender" from Futurama
And a hedgehog named "Humphrey" because he always made a "humf" sound when he was scared.

I'll spare you of the rest...:o

Okay JellyBean, by the way your screen name sounds familiar so I wonder if you were here way back when?

My daughters new corn's name is Amenadiel and the new baby is named Enodia. IF IF IF I can pull off bringing home the other girl her name will be Zefonith.

Amenadiel was named by my daughter. I am not familiar with him but I do know he is on the TV show Lucifer. I have not come across him in my spiritual studies. Enodia, is named after Hecate, and Zefonith after mother Lilith.

I can't forget ancient bearded dragon Jules, who was also named by my daughter when my daughter was 5. Her name is actually Julie, but we have always really called her Jules.

helena the boa after the misfits song.

Haha, so glad I read this because this crossed my mind. I'm a huge Graves fan. It fits for a snake; no arms, no legs.

My dad named his ball python Abaddon after the Prince of the Pit, a fitting name for a snake so I kept it after I took him under my care.

My boa constrictor is Diablo after my favorite video game and because his pattern turns a little red after eating.

And my albino milk snake is called Crush after the popular fizzy orange drink :)

I have a wild Texas rat snake I caught as a baby. These snakes are notorious for biting, or as Steve Irwin used to say being "grumpy". So I named it Oscar.( Sesame Street grouch.)

8 years or so later..(give or take, maybe more) Oscar layed eggs. But her name is still Oscar which fits neither her sex nor disposition.(I have picked on her nearly her whole life..not bad...just enough to aggravate her a little). She hates being tied in knots, so it's a favorite game of mine. When she was somewhere around 18", I once managed to get her in 3 knots!

After 15 years or so...she has really caught on to my game though, and at pretty much 5' , even though there's a lot of length there, it's extremely difficult to tie her in more than one. One time, I was picking on her doing something she didn't like, ( don't remember what exactly),and she bit me, just like a dog or cat would : ( so gently it didn't break the skin.)

I have a red eared slider turtle I caught that plucks little dried shrimp out of my fingers for treats. I named it Vin Diesel (fast and furious)...but this guys fingernails have gotten so long I'm changing it's name to Edward. (scissor hands).

I have a betta named Boy George and a cat named Sammy. Everyone on the street knows Sammy and he knows everyone's cars. He lays out in the street, and if they live on the block, he makes them drive around him. If it's a strange car, he gets out of the street.

Lesser BP (m) called Max after a friend of mine, Maxine, but he's a male so Max
Spider BP (m) called Shannon, who is Maxine's daughter and it can be a male or female name in Ireland
Pied BP (m) named LJ after Laura Trott and Jason Kenny the 2 British Olympic/World track cycling champions
BEL BP (m) named Sam as I like the name
And lastly my female CA x Nicaraguan T+ Sunglow BCI who I have named Val in honour of my wife who passed away with Kidney Cancer on 12 November 2015

Well my corn is Maize for obvious reasons. My luecistic black rat is Luna because she is white like the moon. My ball pythons follow a mobster/old timey feel, Lucky Luciano, Betty, Eden, Bonnie and Clyde. My garters follow a Star Wars theme, Obi, Darth and Chewie. My cribo is Abbath because his face markings remind me of black metal musicians.

Fang (male normal BCI), our first, came with the name from his previous human. It was cute so we kept it.

Then came Edward (male hypo BCI) and Bella (female normal BCI). Bella was my son's snake, and he has a crush on a girl named Bella at school. The first thing I could think of was Edward, along with Bella (they were purchased on the same day). I did it as more of a joke, but no one caught on, and my husband "approved" the name, so the joke became a reality. No one in the house but me likes Twilight, btw.

Oreo (normal BCI) was the other little girl we purchased a week after Edward and Bella. She was my step son's snake. Unfortunately, 4 months later she passed away. RIP my little Oreo girl.

Then came Tigger (male tiger reticulated python), because he's a tiger, and he's bouncy. And his mate Blossom (female lavender albino tiger reticulated python) 2 weeks later.

Next we have Iris (female albino burmese python). I wanted to name her after a female goddess. Iris is the Greek goddess of the rainbow. It fit with her personality. She's an angel amongst the devils that cared for her, bringing colour and life to our family.

We then picked up Charlotte (female woma python). I looked up authentic Australian names, thinking I would find something aboriginal to honour the country of her descendants, and Charlotte was what came up. Didn't really fit with what I was looking for, but it's a cute name.

After Oreo passed away, the pet store let us pick up a "replacement" for my step son, a super salmon female boa. He named her Alex, after a character in Mindcraft, but he also has a crush on his older sister's friend Alex, so we think that's why he chose the name.

For my birthday, my husband found a breeder of BCAs, and in came Cyclops (male) and Storm (female). Super heroes from X-men. That was completely random.

Our first rescue was named Hope (female poss dwarf BCI). Her previous humans had named her Megan Fox, and that's a big fat NOPE in this house. My step daughter threw out the name Hope. It seems to fit.

And our latest, Hennessy (female BCI). Her previous human named her, and we kinda like the name. She was named after the alcohol, and that's ok.

Nice unisex name. *That's also another reason I liked Dr. Coil,*I didn't know what sex he was when I got him*either. I still don't know, really,*just guessing based on tail morphology.

Yep, we're still work "colleagues", haha. His*tank is right behind my desk. I wonder if I could pass him off as a co-author on my next paper...hmmmmm.
