I found a lizard!

Which given I live in Sheffield, North England is very exciting. We were out in a glorious part of the world called the Peak District (no prizes for guessing why it is so called but seriously has scenery to rival anywhere in the world) visiting the spot where we scattered my mums ashes and there basking on a dry stone wall was a couple of tiny lizards.

Didn't think they came this far north and is kind of neat as it's just the sort of thing my mum would have liked.

Don't know how many months of the year they're active for-not many I'd imagine.

Looks like he's in the skink family, possibly?

No idea. Very small. 1.5" body max. No big lizards in the uk-doesn't get hot enough. We also get grass snakes, slow worms (a legless lizard) and Adders and that's about it as far as herping goes for us...

My first thought was Sand Lizard (Lacerta agilis), but this lizard is restrictet to a small area in the South and another at the western coast. Since there are only two lizards which can be found all over England and one of them is the legless Slow Worm (Anguis fragilis) it has to be the Viviparous Lizard (Zootoca vivipara).

Stunning find!!! Congrats.. Danny, we also get the smooth snake but it's localised to only a couple counties in the uk... I'd love to find one of these myself tho, well done! :)

Tiny little thing he was. There was 3 or 4 of them but they are incredibly flighty so missed a shot of them properly basking.

I'll go back next year and see if I can spot any again.

I was really pleased as I didn't think we'd get anything this far north and I'd imagine they brumate for at least as long as they're active for.

Beautiful place-was chuffed to see them.

Will go back next year and see if they're still there.

Hi Danny,I don't but gonna go find it,lol ,I love it when I'm abroad watching all the reptiles scuttle about,seems really boring here, my mates got sloworms in the woods at the bottom of garden there pretty cool, fingers crossed there's still there next year for you
